This impressive and comprehensive new Asian Handbook for Theological Education and Ecumenism,
focussing on key resources for teaching on Christian unity and common witness in Asian contexts, is
a great contribution towards setting the tone and theological horizon for a new formulation of Asian
ecumenism.
It is a collection of articles that reflects the ongoing ‘double wrestle’, with the texts of biblical tradition
as well as with contemporary contexts, as the churches in Asia reflect theologically on what it means
to be the churches in Asia in each particular period of time, especially in expressing their unity in
Christ and in witnessing together the love of Christ amidst the realities and challenges posed by
the changing and pluralistic context of Asian communities. Being a region with limited available
resources and extreme diversity, education and training is widely thought to be a significant way of
opening a new future of common witness and sharing in various areas.
There is a need to promote new models of wider and evangelical Asian ecumenism in which
polarizations of the past are overcome and so-called ‘Evangelicals’ and so-called ‘Ecumenicals’
cannot be projected and understood any more as exclusive opposites because this simply does
not match with emerging realities in the 21st century. The new kind of broader and evangelical
ecumenism in Asia this Handbook is giving witness for takes the best from historical ecumenism and
from evangelical renewal and charismatic churches. This tremendously rich resource book will open
new dimensions of exploring newer ways of community life, common witness, mutual enrichment
and guidance of Asian churches through the new era of ecumenism.
The ‘Handbook’ will be a standard reference volume to be consulted in any Theological library, both
in Universities as well as in Churchrelated Seminaries.

This astonishing overview of the history of the origins of Christianity has an extra edge over
other scholarly works done in this genre. The author depicts Jesus as a man, but not God,
and rejected the miracles of the Gospel. He believes that by humanizing Jesus, he restores
to him a greater dignity. Jesus has been depicted as a Galilean who was transformed from
a Jew to a Christian, and Christianity that emerged was free from any Jewish influences.
The work is largely based on the Gospel of John. This enlightening presentation lays down
an incredible foundation of the true facts, thereby summarizing the intellectual and social
background of Christianity. It covers subjects like History, Missions, Philosophy, Religion,
and presents a different biographical sketch of Jesus as human. This unequalled work fully
presents itself for the Undergraduate and Postgraduate Students of History, Researchers,
Christian Religious Scholars, Historians, Educationalists, Christian Laity, Church Clergies,
and also for those who aspires to understand the history from a new angle.
Joseph Ernest Renan (1823-1892) was a French philosopher, historian, philologist,
and scholar of religion. He was educated and trained for the priesthood but left the Catholic
church in 1845, feeling that its teachings were incompatible with the findings of historical
criticism, though he retained a quasi-Christian faith in God. He continued his studies in
religion and philology, and, after visiting Syria on a government commission, he returned
to Paris and became professor of Hebrew in the College de France, from which he was
suspended for a time on account of protests against his heretical teachings.
He was luminous, supple, naturally pliant and yielding; he had, more than any nineteenth-
century writer, the quality of charm which enveloped, and finally conquered, the readers.
