BRONCHIECTASIS
A long-term abnormal widening of the
bronchi the air tubes that branch deep into
the lungs. Bronchiectasis can cause recurrent
lung infections, a disabling cough, shortness
of breath, and coughing up blood.
Why it happens?
Bronchiectasis can develop if the tissue and
muscles that surrounds the bronchi are damaged
or destroyed.
 History of lung infection (ex. Pneumonia,
Whooping cough)
 Underlying problems with the immune
system - this can make the bronchi prone to
infection.
 Allergic Bronchopulmonary Aspergillosis
(ABPA) - an allergy to certain type of fungi
that can cause the bronchi to become
inflamed if spores from the fungi are inhaled.

What are the most common symptoms?

 Persistent cough with phlegm
 Shortness of breath

Who is Affected?
Bronchiectasis can affect anyone at any age, though the symptoms
usually do not develop until middle age.

Is there a Treatment?
Though the damaged of bronchiectasis to the lungs is permanent,
their are some management and treatment that can supress
symptoms and prevent the damage from getting worse. Surgery for
this condition is very rare.
 Postural drainage. Postural drainage is part of all treatment
plans, because draining of the bronchiectatic areas by gravity
reduces the amount of secretions and the degree of infection.
 Chest physiotherapy. Chest physiotherapy, including
percussion and postural drainage, is important in the
management of secretions.
 Antimicrobial therapy. Antimicrobial therapy based on the
results of sensitivity studies on organism cultured from sputum
is used to control infection.
 Bronchodilators. Bronchodilators, which may be prescribed
for patients who have reactive airway disease, may also assist
with secretion management.
