The IAEA Radiation Technical Services quality management system is a tool to

maintain services accredited according to ISO/IEC 17025:2005 requirements. The

IAEA quality management system can serve as a model to similar laboratories in
Member States.

The IAEA Safety Standard Radiation Protection and Safety of Radiation Sources:

International Basic Safety Standards (GSR Part 3) states in requirement 25 that:
“Employers, registrants and licensees shall be responsible for making arrangements
for assessment and recording of occupational exposures and for workers’ health
surveillance.” This shall be...“on the basis of individual monitoring where appropriate,
and shall ensure that arrangements are made with authorized or approved dosimetry
service providers that operate under a quality management system.”

Other IAEA documents, including the IAEA General Safety Requirement Leadership

and Management for Safety (GSR Part 2) and the IAEA Safety Guide The
Management System for Technical Services in Radiation Safety (GS-G-3.2), also
provide detail on radiation protection.

Accredited methods at the IAEA include individual and workplace monitoring.

Individual monitoring methods include internal and external dosimetry of
occupationally exposed workers. Workplace monitoring methods include air and
surface contamination monitoring, waste drum measurements, and leakage testing.
