Activity 1: Word Vocabulary

The following are important terms which are related to the lesson. Use as many references as
you can to define each of these terms. Be sure to put it in the context of the lesson.
1. Atmosphere 6. Ozone
2. Energy 7. Photosynthesis
3. Gravity 8. Moon
4. Magnetosphere 9. Goldilocks
5. Water 10. Stratosphere

1. ATMOSPHRE
-The atmosphere of Earth is the layer of gases, commonly known as air,
retained by Earth's gravity, surrounding the planet Earth and forming its
planetary atmosphere. The atmosphere of Earth protects life on Earth by
creating pressure allowing for liquid water to exist on the Earth's surface,
absorbing ultraviolet solar radiation, warming the surface through heat
retention (greenhouse effect), and reducing temperature extremes
between day and night (WIKIPEDIA)
2. ENERGY
-All forms of energy are associated with motion. For example, any given body
has kinetic energy if it is in motion. A tensioned device such as
a bow or spring, though at rest, has the potential for creating motion; it
contains potential energy because of its configuration. Similarly,
nuclear energy is potential energy because it results from the configuration
of subatomic particles in the nucleus of an atom.
-In physics, energy is the quantitative property that must be transferred to
an object in order to perform work on, or to heat, the object.[note 1] Energy is
a conserved quantity; the law of conservation of energy states that energy can
be converted in form, but not created or destroyed. The SI unit of energy is
the joule, which is the energy transferred to an object by the work of moving
it a distance of 1 metre against a force of 1 newton.(WIKIPEDIA)
3.GRAVITY
-the force that attracts a body toward the center of the earth, or toward any
other physical body having mass(DICTIONARY)
-a fundamental physical force that is responsible for interactions which
occur because of mass between particles, between aggregations of matter
(such as stars and planets), and between particles (such as photons) and
aggregations of matter, that is 10 -39 times the strength of the strong force,
and that extends over infinite distances but is dominant over macroscopic
distances especially between aggregations of matter(MIRRIAM-WEBSTER)
4. MAGNETOSPHERE
- a region of space surrounding a celestial object (such as a planet or star)
that is dominated by the object's magnetic field so that charged particles
are trapped in it(MIRRIAM-WEBSTER)
5.WATER
- Water is an inorganic, transparent, tasteless, odorless, and nearly
colorless chemical substance, which is the main constituent
of Earth's hydrosphere and the fluids of all known living organisms. It is vital
for all known forms of life, even though it provides
no calories or organic nutrients.(WIKIPEDIA)
6. OZONE
- zone (O3) is a highly reactive gas composed of three oxygen atoms. It is
both a natural and a man-made product that occurs in the Earth's upper
atmosphere (the stratosphere) and lower atmosphere (the troposphere).
Depending on where it is in the atmosphere, ozone affects life on Earth in
either good or bad ways.( ttps://www.epa.gov)
7. PHOTOSYNTHESIS
- Photosynthesis is what first produced oxygen in the atmosphere billions of
years ago, and it's still what keeps it there. Sunlight splits the water
molecules (made of hydrogen and oxygen) held in a plant's leaves and
releases the oxygen in them into the air. The leftover hydrogen combines
with carbon dioxide to produce carbohydrates, which the plant uses as
food(MIRRIAM-WEBSTER)
8. MOON
- the earth's natural satellite (see SATELLITE SENSE 1A) that shines by the
sun's reflected light, revolves about the earth from west to east in about
29¹/₂ days with reference to the sun or about 27¹/₃ days with reference to
the stars, and has a diameter of 2160 miles (3475 kilometers), a mean
distance from the earth of about 238,900 miles (384,400 kilometers), and a
mass about one eightieth that of the earth.(MIRRIAM-WEBSTER)
9. GOLDILOCKS
-Refers to the habitable zone around the star where the temperature is just
right – not too cold and not too hot – for liquid water to exist on an planet
10. STRATOSPHERE
- he part of the earth's atmosphere which extends from the top of the
troposphere to about 30 miles (50 kilometers) above the surface and in
which temperature increases gradually to about 32° F (0° C) and clouds
rarely form

Activity 2: Hey! What is the Reason?

Enumerate three reasons why Earth has the capacity to sustain life.
 Earth is located at the right distance from the sun. It’s not too close nor too far
making it able to have manageable temperature.
 Earth is the only planet that has water and air suitable from living.
 Earth is the only planet that contains plants.
 Earth has an Ozone layer that protects living creatures against the harmful
Ultraviolet rays from the sun.
 Earth is has the best air the planets. Though earth’s air got quite polluted it is
still better compared to other planet whose atmosphere is filled with mercury,
sulfuric acid, etc.
