7.
Two oxides of iron on analysis gave
the following results :
(i) 0.72 g of ferrous oxide contained
0.56 g of iron.
(ii) 1.60 g of ferric oxide contained
1.12 g of iron. Prove that the
above data illustrates the law of
multiple proportions.
State and explain the law of multiple
proportions, 1.5 g of each of the two
oxides of an element on reduction
with hydrogen produced 1.331 g and
1.106 g of the element respectively.
Show that the results are in
agreement with the law of multiple
proportions.
. (a) State the law of multiple
proportions and derive it from
Dalton’s atomic theory.
(o) If a certain oxide of nitrogen
weighing 11 g yields 5.6 litres of
nitrogen and another oxide of
nitrogen weighing 15 g yields the
same volume of oxygen (all
measurements are made at
N.T.P.), then show that this data
illustrates the law of multiple
proportions.
[Hints. 22.4 litre of any gas at
N.T.P. weighs equal to its
molecular mass in grams.]
