Operator Maintenance
The Silencer® S2200R is virtually maintenance free if a few
PERIODIC common sense rules are followed. Remove power and read the entire
MAINTENANCE procedure prior to performing any maintenance!

Turning the power off does not remove power to the

WARNING centrifuge. Remove all power to the unit by unplugging
the power cord.

Standard safety precautions for handling of biological

WARNING hazards must be followed!

Do not get any liquids into the top of the motor. Many
CAUTION disinfectants are extremely corrosive and may damage
the motor.

Allowing liquid levels in the rotor chamber to rise to the

CAUTION bottom of the motor seal may result in serious damage
to the centrifuge.

• The rotor, carriers, and inserts must be removed from the centrifuge for disinfecting.

• Clean tube breakages and spills immediately and thoroughly. The interior can be cleaned with
disinfectants such as bleach, followed by a clear water rinse and wipe. The interior must be
rinsed and dried thoroughly before using the centrifuge. Use water sparingly when rinsing, as
the motor seal is not watertight.

• The exterior should be kept clean with the use of a mild soap and a damp (not wet) lint-free
cloth. The centrifuge must be dried thoroughly before using.

• Inspect brushes every 3 to 6 months depending upon workload (approximately 1,000 hours of
run time), and replace if they are less than 1/2 inch in length, or if there is insufficient spring
tension for reliable brush to commutator contact.

• Replace brushes if the unit is displaying the E02 brush warning approximately every twenty

OPERATOR MAINTENANCE
cycles. This warning indicates the internal run time counter has logged over 1,000 hours of run
time since the last brush change.

• As needed, the condenser coils should be cleaned by vacuum or compressed air.

• As needed, the drain must be emptied by removing the drain cap on the back of the centrifuge.

• The horizontal rotor and carriers must be cleaned and lubricated with the cleaner/lubricant Tri-
Flow™ (see Appendix F for details):

after cleaning or decontamination of rotor, carriers, or rotor chamber

after tube breakages
when experiencing frequent rotor imbalances at speeds below 1,000 RPM
when experiencing excessive vibration at speeds below 1,000 RPM
at least once per month (more frequent in high frequency use or high speed applications)

Turn on power to the S2200R. Open the lid, turn the power off, and
BRUSH unplug the power cord.

Remove the brushes (noting the brush orientation). Replace if they
are less than 1/2 inch in length, or if there is insufficient spring
tension for reliable brush to commutator contact (see Appendix D
for part number).

AT THIS TIME IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT THE CARBON

DUST BE BLOWN OUT OF THE MOTOR HOUSING BY
USING COMPRESSED AIR.

Install new brushes (see Appendix E for details).

Reverse procedure to re-install motor. Lightly grease motor shaft

before reinstalling the rotor.

Seat new brushes by running with bare rotor installed (no metal
carriers or inserts) for one hour, at 4,000 RPM.

If the brushes were replaced the brush hour counter needs to be

reset. To reset the counter press and hold the front panel POWER
SWITCH and TIME DOWN switch while turning on the back panel
power interrupt switch.

Avoid breathing the brush dust by working in a well

WARNING ventilated area and using personal protection.

Use eye googles to avoid eye injury.

Be sure to replace the brush in the brush holder it was

CAUTION removed from, and with the same orientation.
