1.9 Demonstrate the method of joining two mooring lines.

 Two parted mooring lines can have joined together by using Carrick bend
 Two separate mooring lines can have joined together by using reef knot
Both knots are flat so it can be run on warping drum smoothly.

Mooring Tails
Mooring Tails or mooring pendants are special-length ropes that introduce elasticity in a high Modulus (low
stretch) mooring & towing line, providing safer operations.

Their primary use is to give elasticity in a low stretch line (High Modulus Synthetic Rope or Wire Rope)
which reduces the peak loads and extends the service life.

This way, small vessel movements (i.e. caused by swell or even waves) are absorbed by the mooring tail’s
elongation and do no subject the main line in high loads.

Mooring Tails are ideal for use in Mooring, STS & Towing operations. KATRADIS Mooring Tails are
constructed according to the latest regulations and recommendations of OCIMF for the safe mooring of
tankers, LNG and LPG vessels.

Mooring Tails are also appropriate for use in Cruise Ships, Bulk Carriers and Container Ships. The standard
tail length for tankers, LNG and LPG vessels is 11m or 22m.

NYLON TAILS

 Provides additional elasticity to mooring wires

 Reduces dynamic load induced in the mooring wires due to wind, and passing ships.
 Breaking strength of tails 25% excess of breaking strength of mooring wires
 Cyclic loading degrades synthetic ropes
 Sunlight degrades synthetic ropes
 Length of tail should be 11m overall
 Tail should be attached to wire by mandel or tonsberg shackle
 Eyes of tail served by leather / plastic sheathing
 Eyes of wire chafing protection
 Tails should be replaced every 18 months unless after inspection, the condition is good
