Reinforced Concrete Structures Design (CIEG310)
Tutorial # 5 design of Slabs
Teacher: Prachand Man Pradhan, PhD
Students: VIth Semester, B.E. Civil Engineering & B.TEch. Environmental Engineering (2020)

 Use IS: 456-2002 and SP16. Supporting figures must be provided.

 Write your name, department and roll number on top right. Hand written assignment in A4 paper is
preferred.

Q1. Design a floor slab for an interior room with clear dimensions of 9m by 3.5m for a building located at
Dhulikhel. The slab is resting on beams having 230mm width. Take Live load as 4kN/m2 and the dead
load from finish, partition, etc. as 1.5kN/m2. Assume the grade of concrete as M25 and the grade of
steel as Fe415.

Q2. Perform the design for Example 14.2 of A.K. Jain’s Reinforced Concrete Limit State Design book with
M20 concrete (instead of M15).

Q3. Design a rectangular RC slab of size 4m by 6m (effective) which is discontinuous at the two adjacent
edges. The slab is subjected to a factored live load of 8kN/m2 in addition to its Dead Load using M20
grade concrete and Fe415 grade steel. The load of floor finish is 1kN/m2. The corners of the slab are
restrained from lifting.
NOTE: Civil Engg. students should design slab S4 and Environmental Engg. students should design
S2 slab.

Design of S5 is optional for anyone.
