God’s people repented and promised to be faithful

After the Israelites finished rebuilding the wall, they came to the gates to hear a message from Ezra. Ezra
was a scribe – that’s a person who writes down copies of the law. So he knew the law very very well.
When the people came to the gates, Ezra recited the law to the people.

Neh 8:5-6

As he continued reading, the people realized that they did not live up to these standards, and so they
wept and wept. They promised to change the way they lived their lives and to start obeying God. That’s
what repenting means. After that, they were able to celebrate with a great big celebration!

And actually, that’s the same as us! No matter how hard we try, we will have a hard time keeping the
law perfectly. Sometimes we hurt one another’s feelings, sometimes we may cheat at school or in
games, sometimes we may think poorly about somebody and not love them as fellow human beings that
God created. That’s why we need a saviour. Do you guys know who that is? God sent Jesus to obey the
law perfectly and die for our sins. Because of this we can trust Jesus for our salvation.
