Recreational Therapy

Arts Assignment #4
 Name: Sarah Quinlan

Title of Arts Activity: Splatter Shirts of Sentiment

Grade: Grades 7 -8

Goal of arts activity: Self Discovery

How goal will be achieved through the arts activity:

Students will reflect on their composition and realize that our feelings are unique to ourselves.
We all have emotions but express them in our own individual way. With observing their art,
they should perceive that feelings sometimes intertwine, or stand alone, or dominate and
overwhelm, but they are a part of who we are. We should embrace those feelings and wear
them pride, just as I hope the students will with their shirts.

Arts activity instructions:
1. The selection of music chosen will be played for the students to listen to. Songs will not be
played in succession, but with breaks in between each.
a. Helter Skelter – The Beatles
b. Just the Way You Are – Bruno Mars
c. Jealousy – Queen
d. Got This Feeling – Justin Timberlake
e. The Swan – Yo Yo Ma
f. Mission Impossible Theme Song – Michael Giacchino
g. Sing Sing Sing – Benny Goodman Orchestra
h. Stronger – Kelly Clarkson
i. What the World Needs Now – Sara Bareilles

2. After each song, students will reflect on their emotions of how the music changes their mood
and picking the paint colour to represent it. White will not be used because it will not be visible
on the shirt.

3. The toothbrush will be the tool for application and paint will be splattered on to their personal
shirt.
4. The activity will be complete once all the songs have been played. It is not necessary that all the
colours have been used, however I have selected songs that portray each of these feeling in
myself. The students will have constructed a shirt of sentiment.

Choose 1 disability and explain 2 variations you would make to the arts activity to promote
full inclusion:

For students with physical limitations and fine motor difficulties, there are variations that can
be implemented to promote full inclusion.
1. Pour paint into a disposable bowl for easier application of colour onto the brush.
2. Build up the handle of the toothbrush with masking tape or rubber grips to improve the
grasp of the tool in the student’s hand.
3. Place the shirts on the floor, rather than on an easel. This will allow total arm
movement when splattering the paint rather than just flicking of the wrist.
