Time: Unknown

Location: 3’s classroom

Name of Child: Boy

Setting: Boy (B) is seated at table with wood pieces on a plate in front of him and paint to his

left. He is holding a paintbrush in his right hand. His teacher (T) is seated across the table from

him.

B: (Looks to right and left while saying) Okay. I need some glue but where’s the glue

T: The glue. Are you ready to glue?

B: Nods head yes.

T: (gets up from seat and asks) You’re going to glue those?

B: continues painting wood pieces

Pause in video. Starts again with the teacher sitting to the boy’s right side. He is holding the

glue bottle in both hands over his wood pieces and squeezing the glue out.

B: (squeezing glue bottle with both hands over the wood pieces) It’s falling off. (Continues to

squeeze glue on wood piece)

T: It is. You have a piece underneath it. (points to wood pieces on plate)

B: continues to squeeze glue on individual wood pieces with right hand.

T: Okay. What are you going to glue together now? Oh. Let’s put this over here. (Takes glue

bottle from boy’s hand.) Now what are you going to do with your pieces?

B: (Looks at plate and looks at glue bottles. Reaches for glue bottle as he says) Oh, there’s one

more piece left. (Squeezes glue with right hand onto wood piece. Then squeezes with both

hands.)

T: (As B is squeezing glue) What’s your plan for the glue?

B: Stops gluing

T: It’s a lot of glue. What’s happening?

B: (Looking at his plate) It’s spilling. It’s getting off. (Rests face between his fists with elbows

on table)

T: It’s getting off?

B: Yeah. How (couldn’t understand him) to stay off?

T: So what do you want to do with it now?

B: (Face still resting between his fists) Why is it falling off?

T: Why is it sliding off?

B: Yeah.

T: Because you put a lot of glue on there.

B: Yeah.

T: Yeah.

B: (With face still resting between his fists) Just too not bad. It’s too bad.

T: Too bad? (While pointing to wood pieces on plate ) What if you glue one of these on top?

B: (Reaches for glue bottle with right hand)

T: Look! Just put it on top of the glue. (Points to wood pieces on plate) You don’t need any

more glue.

B: (Begins to glue certain spots) Is this a little bit? (T takes glue from b’s hands. B looks at

project. He shakes his head. Reaches for glue bottle and begins to squeeze more glue with right

hand and then both hands.)

T: Just a little bit more?

B: (Begins gluing another piece and squeezes more glue)

T: (observes for a few moments) Are you more interested in seeing it slide off your wood pieces?

B: Yeah

T: Yeah

B: Yeah. I think that’s a good idea. I think (couldn’t understand what he says) (Looks at project

and pauses with squeezing glue.

T: Are you done painting?

B: (Reaches to right side to set glue down.) Yeah. (Grabs another bottle of glue) I need some

more glue. (Begins to squeeze glue. Smiles.) That’s a little bit. (Puts glue down and shakes

hands together to side.)
