Math Lesson Plan

Standards: 1.OA Represent and solve problems using addition and subtraction.

Objective: The student will be able to subtract multiple single digits using simple word problems
and skittles in groups of three within 95% accuracy.

Materials: Notebook paper, pencils and a bag of skittles.

Procedure:

Assess Prior Knowledge:

 Review the words “taking from” and “subtracting.” (auditory)


 2. Have students work examples of single number word problems on board. (visual)

Anticipatory Set: Introduce the skittles, the notebook paper and pencils.

Introduce:

 1. Write single number word problems on the board. (visual)


 2. Introduce vocabulary term “Taking apart.”
 3. Work through each problem using skittles as well explaining the word “taking
apart” using the skittles.
 4. Introduce notebook paper and pencils to write numbers down for word problems.

Guided Practice:

 1. Put students in groups of 3. Each group gets a bag of skittles.


 2. Write word problems on the board. (visual) Read it out loud. (auditory)
 3. Direct students to display correct equation with blocks. (tactile)
 4. Direct students to work out equation using notebook paper and pencils. (tactile)
 5. Work several more word problems out together.

Independent Classroom Practice:

 1. Students who understand can complete handout of subtracting word problems.

Provide Accommodations:

 1. For students having difficulty, provide extra help working through the word
problems.

Assessment: Work check and teacher observation. Hand out homework assignment.
