Consider there is a parabola with equation y  a  bx  cx which passes through the

2

points (-2,3), (-1,2) and (1,6).

The objective is to find a, b and c.

Now given three points are substituted in parabola equation and then three linear
equations are formed which are then solved using Gauss Jordan elimination method as
shown below:

Equation 1 passing through point (-2,3) is as:

y  a  bx  cx 2
3  a  b  2   c  2 
2

3  a  2b  4c

Equation 2 passing through point (-1,2) is as:

y  a  bx  cx 2
2  a  b  1  c  1
2

2  abc

Equation 3 passing through point (1,6) is as:

y  a  bx  cx 2
6  a  b  1  c  1
2

6  abc

Now the augmented matrix formed is as:

1 2 4 3 
 
1 1 1 2 
1 1 1 6 

Now further above matrix is solved using elementary row operations as

R2  R2  R1 , R3  R3  R1
is applied as:

1 2 4 3 
 
0 1 3 1
0 3 3 3 

Now further R1  R1  2 R2 , R3  R3  3R2 is applied as:

1  2(0) 2  2(1) 4  2( 3) 3  2(1) 

 
 0 1 3 1 
 0 3  3(1) 3  3(3) 3  3(1) 
1 0 2 1 
 
 0 1 3 1
0 0 6 6 

R3
R3 
Now further 6 is applied as:
 1 0 2 1 
 
 0 1 3 1
 0 0 6 6 
 
 1 0 2 1 
 
  0 1 3 1
0 0 6 6 
 
6 6 6 6 
1 0 2 1 
 
 0 1 3 1
0 0 1 1 

Now further R2  R2  3R3 , R1  R1  2 R3 is applied as:

1  2  0  0  2  0 2  2  1 1  2  1 
 
0  3  0  1  3 0 3  3  1 1  3  1 
 0 0 1 1 
 
1 0 0 3 
 
 0 1 0 2 
0 0 1 1 

a =3,b =2,c =1
Thus, the values are as .
