Notes: Write down: Known, find, schematics (if needed), assumptions, and analysis.

1. In steady state condition, the heat transfer rate will be constant when heat flows in various
modes. Consider a 10 cm thick wall with a thermal conductivity of 10 W/m.K. The inner wall
temperature is 120ºC while the outer wall temperature is 45ºC. If the temperature of outside the
wall is 25ºC and the emissivity of the outer wall surface is 0.9:
a. calculate the heat transfer flux through the wall.
b. determine the radiation heat transfer flux from the outer wall to the space outside the
wall.
c. determine the convection heat transfer coefficient under the above condition.

2. A styrofoam cutter made from nickel wire is designed for a temperature of 250ºC with an
ambient temperature of 30ºC. A battery with a voltage of 4.5 V supplies a current of 4 A
during a steady cutting process. If nickel wire is considered as a control volume, determine the
amount of input energy (𝐸̇ ), energy generation (heat generation, 𝐸̇ ), output energy (𝐸̇ ),
and the rate of energy stored in the nickel wire (𝐸̇ ). If the entire system is selected as the
control volume, determine 𝐸̇ , 𝐸̇ , 𝐸̇ , dan 𝐸̇ .

3. Based on the styrofoam cutter mentioned in problem no.2, if the electrical energy is uniformly
dissipated in the nickel wire, with a diameter D = 1.2 mm and a length L = 20 cm, calculate
the volumetric heat generation, 𝑞̇ (W/m3) and determine the convection heat transfer
coefficient (W/m2.K) if the radiation from the nickel wire is negligible.
