Dear Secretary Mnuchin and Administrator Carranza:
I commend your ongoing efforts to help our nation’s economy during the greatest challenge it
has faced since the Great Depression. So far, the Small Business Administration has approved
over 5 million Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans to businesses across the country,
which is a testament to your leadership,
However, I was alarmed to recently learn from my Arizona constituents that an Oregon-based
non-profit, Stand for Children LLC, was a major recipient of between $1-2 million in PPP
funding. This organization, in turn, has contributed well over $3 million in the second quarter
0f 2020 to advocate for an Arizona ballot initiative, Proposition 208, that would raise state
income taxes to fund public education,
1am disturbed that a nonprofit seemingly took advantage of a program designed to help
employers meet basic payroll needs in order to extravagantly fund a highly charged advocacy
effort 1,200 miles from its headquarters. This is a slap in the face to the millions of Main Street
business owners across the country who are struggling just to keep the lights on.
Accordingly, I respectfully ask your office to investigate the circumstances related to Stand for
Children’s loan approval and any similar approvals. If reforms need to be made to the PPP
process, please know that I am willing to assist you in whatever way possible.
Sincerely,
Member of Congress
