Specific Objective

Differentiate Metric System from

English System of units.
What is your height in centimetre
(cm)? How about in feet (ft)?
Are these two units of
measurement the same? Why or
why not?
Word Check :
Write the letters on the spaces below to complete
the word.

1. _O_U_ME – the amount of

space occupied the an object.
2. P_EC_SI_N- refers to how
close the measurements from
each other.
3. U_I_S- are standards for
expressing and comparing the
measurement of physical
quantities.
4. _H_S_CA_ Q_ _N_I_I_S–
are characteristic or property of
an object that can be measured or
calculated from other
measurements.
5. M_T_I_ S_S_EM- a system of
measurement that uses the power of
10 to relate quantities over the vast
ranges encountered in nature.

English and Metric Systems
Why is it important to
learn to convert units of
measurements?
 There are two major systems of units used
in the world:

1. SI units (acronym for the French Le

Système International d’Unités, also known
as the Metric System)

2. English units (also known as the

imperial system).
 English units were historically used in
nations once ruled by the British Empire.
Today, the United States is the only
country that still uses English units
extensively.

 Virtually every other country in the world

now uses the metric system, which is the
standard system agreed upon by scientists
and mathematicians.
The metric system provides a
universal language for measurement
that can be understood regardless of
where you are from or what language
you speak.
WHAT IS HAPPENING IN THE U.S.?
Better
The United States, however, has not Organization

completely embraced the metric system, and

so many items in the U.S. are still measured
in English units. Other items, however, are
sold in metric units,
such as bottled sodas.
The mixture of systems
can be confusing.

first need to learn the symbols used in

both the metric and English systems
for properties such as mass, length,
volume, and temperature.
7 Physical Quantities
 In physics, there are seven
fundamental physical quantities that
are measured in base or physical
fundamental units: length, mass,
time, electric current, temperature,
amount of substance, and
luminous intensity.

THREE STEPS for conversion:
1. Identify the type of measurement:
Mass? Length?
Volume? Temperature?

2. Use Conversion Table.

3. Use Unity Fraction(s).
