Welcome to ESL M01/M02! This course will help you refine your

What are the policies at this college?
No Smoking
Moorpark College is 100% tobacco free. Smoking, vaping, and tobacco products may not be
consumed on campus. Violators will be subject to disciplinary action.
Attendance
All students, registered or on the waitlist, must attend the first class meeting. Registered
students must attend class regularly. Students missing more than 1/9 of total class
contact hours (i.e. four absences) may be dropped by the instructor.
Final Exams
Final exams must be taken at the time they are scheduled. No examinations are
administered prior to the regular schedule for examinations.
Academic Honesty
Instances of plagiarism or cheating will be reported to the Behavior Intervention Team.
Such activities could include stealing tests, using “cheat sheets,” using unauthorized
technology, copying off another’s test, or turning in someone else’s work as his/her own.

Participation
Syllabus Quiz
During the first week of class, you will read this document in its entirety and complete a
quiz on Canvas. You will get three (3) attempts on the quiz and you may refer to the
syllabus as you are taking it. The quiz cannot be made up and must be taken by the due date.
Lecture Quizzes
Every week, you will read lectures and/or watch videos I upload on Canvas and take
quizzes to assess your understanding on the concepts covered. These quizzes are not timed.
You will get only one (1) attempt for each quiz.
Reading Quizzes
After completing the readings due each week, you will take short multiple-choice quizzes
assessing your comprehension of the material. These quizzes are not timed. You will get only
one (1) attempt for each quiz.
Discussion Board Posts and Replies
Every week, you will read assigned articles and contribute your thoughts and comments on
the discussion board. The initial post is due by Wednesdays at 11:59pm and must be at
least 80 words long. Additionally, you should respond the at least two classmates’ posts in
comments of 20 words or more. The replies are due by Sundays at 11:59pm.
Final Exam
The final exam consists of an in-class essay that must be written in a Bluebook. For this
assignment, you will write a narrative essay about a significant event in your life. The essay
must include a strong thesis, dialogue, specific details, and a reflection of the event’s
significance. The prompt will not be provided beforehand, so you must come prepared to do all of
the writing during the allotted time.
Process Paragraph
Your first out-of-class writing assignment will be to write a one-paragraph paper
explaining a process. In other words, you will explain the steps required to complete a
task. I will provide a more detailed prompt in class. Please note that you will also complete
brainstorming activities, outlines, and rough drafts as part of this assignment.

Compare-Contrast Paragraphs
For this assignment, you will write a two-paragraph paper comparing two topics. In other
words, you will explain the similarities or differences between two subjects. I will
provide a more detailed prompt in class. Please note that you will also complete
brainstorming activities, outlines, and rough drafts as part of this assignment.
Opinion Essay
For this assignment, you will write a four-paragraph essay expressing your opinion about
a given topic AND explaining the reasons for your opinion. I will provide a more detailed
prompt in class. Please note that you will also complete brainstorming activities, outlines,
and rough drafts as part of this assignment.
Problem-Solution Essay
For this paper, you will write a four-paragraph essay explaining an important issue AND
proposing a solution to solve, or help solve, the issue. I will provide a more detailed

Despite our best efforts, it is not uncommon to fall behind on coursework due to an illness, family
emergency, or other unforeseen circumstance. You may use this Late Essay Coupon in case of an
