Here are some activities to do at home as a family that will support
the
learning objectives as we explore All About Me in the coming weeks.
❖ When reading with your child, point out
patterns that you see in the letters. For
example, ask your child to find all the
words that have the first letter of their
name!
❖ Talk to your child about the signs you see
while driving in the car or walking around
the neighborhood. Ask your child questions
about the labels in your home. Learning to
read logos, signs, and pictures helps
children understand that environmental
print conveys information about a place or a
product.
❖ Provide your child with paper and writing
tools and do one (or all) of the following
suggestions: 1) Encourage your child to
“write” their name on any artwork they
create. You might point out that all artists
sign their work, 2) Write notes and cards to
family members and friends, 3) Encourage
your child to draw pictures. Always ask
your child to tell you what has been drawn
or written. Many marks may be your child’s
representation of words or letters.
❖ This activity will support the alphabet
knowledge needed to recognize and write all
the letters in your child’s name, which is a BIG
literacy standard to achieve before
Kindergarten.
❖ This skill is connected to every other early
reading skill! Print Awareness builds a child’s
confidence as they learn to understand their
environment and develop their sense of self as
they learn where to look, what to look at, and
how to read printed material.
❖ Each of these activities will help develop your
child’s effective writing skills. Praise all attempts
at writing letters! If your child seems to tire out
and lose interest in writing or drawing, provide
many activities that strengthen fingers and hands
like playdough, magnetic or linking blocks,
helping to fold the washcloths, and lacing
activities.
