MATERIAL BALANCE EQUATION
Uses:
Investigating Reservoir Performance
• Determining the initial hydrocarbon in place
• Calculating water influx
– Historical Production Data is used to interpret the properties of the reservoir - and the
presence (and power) of an aquifer
• Providing a Means for Production / Pressure Forecasting
Assumptions:
• Homogeneous
• Non-geometrical
Limitations
• Accurate Long Term Production Forecasts
• A Full Geometrical Description of the Reservoir
• The Location of Un-Swept Oil or Gas
• The Target Locations for Infill Wells
REQUIRED
INPUT FILES
MBAL REQUIRED DATA
1. Choose model options
2. PVT
 Define fluid characteristics
3. Tank Data
 Provide reservoir description –Permeability, porosity, etc
 Best estimate of oil/gas initially in place
 Provide description for aquifer (if present)
 Best estimate of size and contact dimensions
 Estimate Relative Permeability (tank-scale)
 Provide Production History (if available)
 Cumulative production
 Use only reliable estimates of reservoir pressure

MATCHING
HISTORY MATCHING
1. Use Analytical Method to fine tune parameters

2. Use Graphical plots

• to check for inaccurate data
• to adjust parameters to obtain rough fit to data

2. Obtain Fractional flow models for prediction wells

• Run Simulation
• Use Fg & Fw Matching
• obtain best-fit tank relative permeability by regression to production data by
tank and well (if production history by well is input)
• Finally you will have your dynamic STOIP or GIIP.
