Lesson Plan: Getting to Know My Neighbor

Grade Level: Fifth Grade

Topic: Cultural Traditions

Goal: Students will be able to recognize and view the cultural diversity among the classroom.

Students will be able to collaborate productively and communicate with students from diverse

backgrounds.

Purpose: To allow to reflect upon their own cultural traditions and the cultural diversity among

others.

Materials: 8 x 10 poster boards, markers, color pencils, glue, other arts and crafts materials. A

picture from each student obtained from home. A hat that contains names of each student.

Lesson Activity:

1. Teacher will initiate classroom discussion about students winter break. They will began

discussing how celebrations.

2. Teacher will define cultural diversity.

3. Student will watch a short video on cultural differences. At the link provided:

4. Class will discuss questions or concerns about video.

5. Teacher will partner up students. They will conduct interview on one another to identify a

cultural tradition of their partner.

6. The students will then use the obtained information to create a piece of art on the poster

board provided to use to present to the class.

7. After presentations are conducted the lesson will close with a class discussion.
