QUESTION 1 [25 marks]

1 kmol of gas Ethane is burned with 175 percent theoretical air in a steady flow combustion
chamber. An analysis of the combustion gases reveals that all the hydrogen in the fuel burns to
H2O but 95 percent of the Carbon burns to CO2 with the remaining 5 percent forming CO. Treating
the air as dry air, determine;
(a) The balanced combustion equation. [6 marks]
(b) The air-fuel ratio. [2 marks]
(c) The amount of heat transfer (in kJ/kg of fuel) from the combustion process if the dry air and
fuel enter the combustion chamber at reference state and the products leave the combustion
chamber at 1540 K. [12 marks]
(d) The dew point temperature for H2O in the products at a total pressure of 1 atm. [5 marks]
