QUESTION 1 [20 MARKS]

A frictionless piston-cylinder device contains 0.5 kg of gas H 2 and 1.6 kg of gas N2 at 100 kPa
and 27oC. Heat is then transferred to the device and the piston starts to move immediately
maintaining constant pressure in the cylinder until the volume of the gas mixture is doubled.
Treating the gas mixture as an ideal gas and assuming constant specific heats at average
temperature, determine:
(a) The temperature when the volume is doubled. [3 Marks]
(b) The specific heats, Cp and Cv of the gas mixture at average temperature. [6 Marks]
(c) The amount of heat transferred to the gas mixture (in kJ). [6 Marks]
(d) The total entropy change of the gas mixture (in kJ/K). [5 Marks]
