Powerful Interaction Observation

Date: March 6, 2020


School: KinderCare
Teacher: Ms. Lorraine
Age of Child: 3

Time: 3:00pm-3:15pm
Setting: Observation occurred after nap time, in a preschool classroom at
KinderCare. The child being a 3 years old boy. The ratio in this class is 12 to 1. Two
teachers were present at the time of the observation.
Interaction: S: Is at the table building with foam blocks
T: Is putting cots away
S: Look Ms. Lorraine
T: WOW! What did you build?
S: A castle
T: Who is inside your castle?
S: He looks inside
T: Who do you see?
S: A dragon
T: Oh! What is the dragon doing?
S: Blowing fire, he said it with a big smile
T: Is there anyone else in the castle?
S: Looks inside?
T: Who do you see?
S: Starts to roll a toy car through the “door” of the castle
T: Smiles, walks away and continues to put the cots away

Learning a lot about what children know and how they think in your back and
forth exchanges with them. “Use open–ended prompts to keep conversations
going.” Page 98
Improvement: I thought the teacher did an awesome job, on her interaction with
the child. An improvement that she could have did is maybe looked inside the
castle with the child. She could have had asked more about the dragon. When the
child started to drive the car through the castle that could have been another
opportunity for another round questions.
