Sadhu

It might seem strange to name this book thus. But my reasons will soon become apparent.
This is the story of a wanderer, who could easily be called (in the language of the Zande of
the southern Sudan) Musomo Ndondoro - Lazy dreamer.
I remember very distinctly my 7 1/2 years in the Sudan, northern Africa, as well as our
travels throughout Europe.

I remember the house in which we lived in Juba, Sudan. Patricia the African chef.
Named so, according to dad, because the missionaries ran out of male names.

I remember the surrounding forest, my dad’s office, our red-tiled hallway, the various
bedrooms and my toys.

We would rise early for a trip. Mom would ensure that there were snacks and drinks. And
then either my dad or our driver, Juba, would drive us in a jeep or truck. I recall several trips
with dad at the wheel. Once, crossing some river by ferry, he navigated the car onto the
boat with the help of lusty cries from the onlookers.

We sailed aboard an Italian cruise ship in Europe and one night, our parents dressed for
dinner then locked us in our cabin for safety.

Continuation
We drove through Genoa, Italy and we saw a traffic accident involving a motorcyclist. I recall
either mom or dad saying “ don’t look!” And keeping us three kids (maybe four) occupied.

In Spain, mom wanted say “hot water” in Spanish, probably at a hotel.

In Switzerland, I got a ukulele full of candy at a toy/candy store, while we waited for the
radiator to cool off. We were traveling over the Simplan Pass.

—————————————————————————————————————————

On another cruise ship, I heard that my sister jumped into the deep end of a swimming pool
and my older brother, the first of us four kids, jumping in and saving her.

I reluctantly lost faith in Santa Clause when my very long list of gift requests went
unanswered. Even when the nice lady promised to deliver it personally

My dad would often tell the story of my sister and I jumping and crossing in midair, from top
bunk to top bunk in a train compartment.

Of course, we were little tykes then.

With each jump, none of which I have any memory of, my dad said he would intone; “Mind
Phillip! Mind Phillip!” Phillip being the youngest child, a baby or toddler at the time.

Finally, dad instructed us to pass Phillip down to him and my sister and I continued jumping.

Nonetheless, dad kept on demanding “Mind Phillip! Mind Phillip!” Until either my sister or I
said “Dad, isn’t that Phillip you have there in your arms?”
