Shell Malaysia engages in three main revenue generating business sectors, namely:
 Upstream – Exploration & Production (E&P);
Upstream International operations concentrate on the efficient development and extraction of
crude oil and natural gas offshore Sarawak and Sabah. In addition, Upstream International
converts natural gas to liquid hydrocarbon products and markets the products globally. Shell is
also a joint venture partner in two liquefied natural gas (LNG) ventures in Bintulu, Sarawak.

Shell’s upstream companies have interests in more than 17 PSCs in offshore blocks in Sabah
and Sarawak. The Shell Middle Distillate Synthesis (SMDS) plant in Bintulu is the world’s first
commercial Gas to Liquids (GTL) plant of its type selling ultra clean GTL products. The
technology converts natural gas to long chain paraffin which are subsequently either
hydrocracked to produce liquid fuels or fractionated to produce chemical feedstocks and
waxes.

 Downstream
Shell’s main activity is in the manufacturing, trading, supply, distribution, marketing and selling
of gasoline, aviation fuel, diesel, fuel oil, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), bitumen, lubricants
and others. Shell is the leading market share in petroleum retail business in Malaysia with
over 900 service stations. Shell manufactures and markets more than 600 different lubricants
for the automotive sector, heavy-duty transport, food processing and power generation.

.
Project & Technology
Shell’s Projects & Technology business provides technical services, technology capability and
facilitates major project delivery in both Upstream and Downstream activities. It also delivers
differentiating technical information technology for Shell and drives research and innovation to
create technology solutions. It also oversees safety and environment performance and

Business Activities
Total’s Exploration & Production branch is active in more than forty countries. Total’s Exploration &
Production branch is constantly seeking to replace hydrocarbon reserves. Our teams are currently
prospecting across the globe to identify high-potential deposits. The exploration process takes place in
four main steps:
 Geophysical and seismic surveys allow us to evaluate the site potential.
 Exploratory drilling is then undertaken to certify the presence of hydrocarbons.
 The results of the drilling are analysed to identify the physical parameters and characteristics
of the deposit.
 Production tests are used to evaluate the feasibility and profitability of the project prior to
considering its development.
In Malaysia, TOTAL signed a production sharing agreement in 2008 with state-owned Petronas for the
offshore exploration Blocks PM303 and PM324. Following the seismic studies performed in 2009 and
2010, TOTAL withdrew from offshore exploration Block PM303 in early 2011. Exploration work
continued on Block PM324 (50%, operator); initial drilling in high pressure/high temperature conditions
started in October 2011 and continues in 2012.
TOTAL also signed in November 2010 a new production sharing agreement with Petronas for the
deep offshore exploration Block SK 317 B (85%, operator) located off the state of Sarawak. 3D
seismic surveys have been carried out on the zone. The results should be available shortly.
