Suicidality rates are among the highest in transgender youth
Austin et al., (2020) 56% of transgender youth reported a previous suicide attempt and 86% reported suicidality. Interpersonal risk factors that were found to significantly contribute to lifetime suicide: LQWHUSHUVRQDOPLFURDJJUHVVLRQV HPRWLRQDOQHJOHFWE\IDPLO\ It is important for mental health professionals and settings to provide a welcoming, respectful, and inclusive environment. Consider inquiring about and recognizing sexual orientation and identity labels that clients report and use to self-identify. Porta et al., (2019) 1/3 of youth who identify as Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Expression (SOGIE) minorities prefer and use nontraditional labels that do not fit into the LGBTQ acronym (e.g. gender fluid, nonbinary, pansexual, etc.) Increased positive emotions associated with opportunities to use labels they perceive as “well-fitting.”
