transgender, gender non-conforming, or gender fluid
1952: Christine Jorgensen becomes the first American transgender
womxn to have sex reassignment surgery
1969: Stonewall riots and the activism of Marsha P. Johnson lead to
a series of policy changes improving LGBTQ+ rights
1999: Transgender Day of Remembrance (November 20th )
commemorates those who lost their lives due to anti-
transgender acts of violence.
2015: Same Sex marriage legalized in the US
2018: The World health organization (WHO) no longer categorizes
transgender identity as a mental disorder
Gender Identity: a person’s sense of being masculine, feminine,
or other gendered
Sexual identity: Who a person is physically attracted to
(womxn, men, other gender (s), neither)
Presentation: the outward expression of the client’s identity
ex. trans-womxn may wear stereotypically “feminine”
clothing/accessories
Womxn: Used to replace the term “women” in order to
represent trans/queer/non-binary identities in language
Individuals who identify as transgender distinguish themselves
by their gender identity
*7rans identity does not determine sexual identity or presentation

Suicidality rates are among the highest in transgender youth

56% of transgender youth reported a previous suicide attempt and 86% reported suicidality.

It is important for mental health professionals and settings to provide a welcoming, respectful, and inclusive
environment.
Consider inquiring about and recognizing sexual orientation and identity labels that clients report and use to self-identify.

use nontraditional labels that do not fit into the LGBTQ acronym (e.g. gender fluid, nonbinary, pansexual, etc.)
