Show that if y = φ(t) is a solution of y 0 + p(t)y = 0, then y = cφ(t) is also a solution for any value
of the constant c.

Solution

Suppose that y = φ(t) is a solution of y 0 + p(t)y = 0. Then

[φ(t)]0 + p(t)[φ(t)] = 0.

Multiply both sides by c, a constant.

c[φ(t)]0 + cp(t)[φ(t)] = 0.

Bring the constant inside each set of square brackets.

[cφ(t)]0 + p(t)[cφ(t)] = 0.

Therefore, cφ(t) satisfies the ODE and is a solution as well. The reason is because y 0 + p(t)y = 0
is a linear ODE.
