1.) Building -> where people worship and visit for religious reasons
2.) Refuge -> A place where people may go to find solutions for their problems
3.) Hierarchy -> Pope, Cardinals, Bishops, Priests, Deacons (Sisters and Brothers are not
included under the Hierarchy
 These definitions do not totally encompass the meaning of the word

Backgrounds of the Word:

Hellenistic

 From Hellenism
 Is associated with Greece, because the ancient name of Greece is Hellen.
 Pertains to the ancient world especially during the time of Alexander the Great.
 Greece was not a unified state. Divided into separate independent states (Sparta, Macedonia,
Athens).
 The word EKKLESIA was coined by Athenians. It was a political term. It was term used to call an
assembly of men to discuss about issues concerning the state. Did not contain any religious
meaning. Athens practiced Democracy (sovereignty (the power to govern) is decided by the
people themselves) as a form of political ideology.

Old Testament

 Septuagint – Greek Translation


 LXX – Symbol used to signify Septuagint. Used because 70 scholars translated the Hebrew into
Greek.
 Original language of the books of the old testament was in Hebrew
 Was translated because the Elders feared that the latter generations may forget or may not be
informed about their religion because they were conquered by the Greek (Alexander the Great).
 Qahal Yahweh -> God’s chosen people (the Israelites). Found in the book of Exodus.

 The meaning of Ekklesia evolved into 3


- Used to refer to the gathering of the early Christians (Prayer gatherings). The early Christians
were Jews and considered Christianism as something similar to Jewish Religion
- Used to refer a particular Christian community found at a particular/specific place (in
reference to how Paul used the term)
- Used to refer to all men and women who have come to believe in Jesus Christ as lord
