• Assignment 1.1 – Calculations
• Worth 15% of Project 1
• Assignment 1.2 – Problem Definition
• Worth 15% of Project 1
• Both due at 11:59pm on Friday, Sept 18 2020

format
Assignment 1.1 - Calculations
1. Calculate the kinetic energy of the egg at the instant it hits the top of the
egg catcher (2m)
2. Calculate the momentum of the egg at the instant it hits the top of the
egg catcher (2m)
3. Calculate the impulse on the egg at the instant it hits the egg catcher
(2m)
4. Calculate the net force acting on the egg when it hits a concrete floor
instead of the egg catcher. Assume a collision time of 0.001 sec (2m)
5. Calculate the net force acting on the egg when it interacts with an egg
catcher. Assume a collision time of 1 sec (2m)
6. What assumptions are you making in your net force calculations? (5m)
Assignment 1.2 – Problem Definition
• The problem definition must contain the following five elements:
• Overall Problem – The simple overall statement that summarizes the problem
• Description of Egg Drop Protocol – This includes the frame (incl. dimensions),
the restrictions on attaching the catcher to the frame, the drop height, the
egg type
• Constraints – These include materials (resources), time, and any other
constraints that might apply to your team (time zone issues, etc.). Materials
are those listed in handout
• Plastic Test Egg – Explain the use of a plastic egg for testing
• Physics – Explain the goal of the project in the context of the physics used in
the calculations
