1 – 1: Introduction to the Oracle Academy
Practice Activities
Objectives
• Give examples of jobs, salaries, and opportunities that are possible by participating in the Academy.
• Explain how your participation in the Academy can help you take advantage of these opportunities.

1. This activity aims to develop your skills for locating, evaluating, and interpreting IT career
information. Use Internet resources provided by your teacher to identify a specific job that
interests you in the IT career field. Then, answer the following:

a. What are the typical tasks involved in this job?


 Computer programmers write code to create software programs. They turn the program designs
created by software developers and engineers into instructions that a computer can follow.
Programmers work closely with software developers, and in some businesses, their duties
overlap. When this happens, programmers can do work that is typical of developers, such as
designing the program. This entails initially planning the software, creating models and
flowcharts detailing how the code is to be written, writing and debugging code, and designing an
application or systems interface.

b. What kind of social, problem-solving or technical skills are required?


 In order to be effective at problems solving you are likely to need some other key skills, which
include Creativity. More complex problems or problems that you have not experienced before
will likely require a more systematic and logical approach to solve, and for those you will need to
use creative thinking. Research Skills, defining and solving problems often requires you to do
some research: this may be a simple google search or more rigorous research project. Team
Working, many problems are best defined and solved with the input of other people. Emotional
Intelligence, it is worth considering the impact that problem and/or its solution has on you and
other people. Risk Management, Solving a problem involves a certain amount of risk – this risk
needs to be weighed up against not solving the problem. Decision Making, Problem solving and
decision making are closely related skills, and making decisions is an important part of the
problem solving process as you will often be faced with various options and alternatives.

c. What kind of training/education is required for the job?


 A Bachelor’s degree is commonly required, but some employers prefer a master’s degree in
computer science, information science or a related field. The skills needed as an IT include
analytical, organizational, leadership, communication and decision-making skills. You need to be
familiarity with project management software, server operating systems, and web platform
development software. You should also be capable of using computer equipment, such as
servers and network analyzers. While certification is voluntary, it is common within the field.

 The different kind of business use these job skills are financial management, marketing sales and
customer service, communication and negotiation, leadership, project management and
planning, delegation and time management, problem solving, and networking.

 The salary range of IT is $41,703/year up to $129,909/year.

 The 10 jobs in Information technology are IT consultant, Cloud architect, Computer forensic
investigator, Health IT specialist, Mobile application developer, Web developer, Software
engineer, Information technology vendor manager, Geospatial professionals, and Data Modeler.
