K,A case study of Cooperatives

District cooperatives Federation Ltd, Gulmi has been established with the objective
of increasing production level, and marketing of quality organic coffee in national
and international markets. It aims for benefits of farmers raising their living
standard. Organic farming of coffee is highly encouraged in Gulmi district. They
only use FYM and poultry manure in field. Organic coffee beans are collected
from member producers along with other local producer and processed in
processing center of cooperative in Johang. Processed coffee is then packaged with
labeling of its own brand. Branding contributes to increase in farmgate price which
encourages for higher production in producers’ level. Coffee cultivated land has
highly increased from few years. Mr. Yubraj Acharya, manager of this
organization said that the coffee is NASAA certified as organic and fetch higher
price in even international market i.e. Japan and France. Four different types of
coffee are being sold which includes Dust (Rs.1100/kg), roasted beans
(Rs.1300/kg), Green beans (Rs.1000/kg) and broken beans(600/kg). The major
problem acquired during marketing is quality loss of processed beans due to lack
of proper equipment and poor technical knowhow. Solar power is mainly used for
drying purpose after harvesting which helps in limiting electricity use in some
extent. Business between the cooperatives that may be producers or marketing-
based cooperatives has been initiated lately and necessary steps are taken to
collaborate with DCPA, syangja.
