General.

The purpose of this chapter is to slrcifv the mtnttnum

recommended practices for ventilation to pr«ect workers who inspect, test;
or work in confined spaces.

Ventilation is used to supplvadequate breathing quality air to an oxygen-

deficient atmosphere or a potential oxvgen- deficient atrncsphere. remcwe
or control atmospheric contaminants, and control temperature for comfort.
However in most confined space applications, supplying breathing air and
controlling atmospheric contaminants are the primary purpose of
ventilation. Ventilation is used to establish initial safe condiuons (prior to
initial entry) and may be necessary to maintain safe conditions during entry
where there is a potentkil for changing atmospheric conditions within a
space (eg, presence of residues or hot work).
