Women Safety in Bangladesh

Similar to other South-Asian countries, Bangladesh is striving to ensure standard safety for the women
living here. Women are facing a lack of proper safety on a daily basis, which hampers their everyday life.
Not only are they facing the shortcomings when it comes to providing impartial treatment, but they are
also at the risk of attacks from the most dismaying of natures. Even in public spaces, women and girls have
to experience or are at the fear of harassment in various forms - from unwanted sexual remarks and
touching to rape and femicide. They are being harassed openly in streets, in and around public
transportations, educational institutions and workplaces, parks etc. and there are sadly no one to raise a
voice. According to Dhaka Tribune, a study reveals that approximately 94% of women travelling on public
transports has fallen a victim of harassment (2018). Due to the massive upraise of these dreadful incidents
and abominable crimes, most of the women feel extremely frightened to walk the streets alone even in the
broad daylight. The victims of the harassments often deal with a painful mental shock, which in most of
the cases lead to depression and in worst cases some may end up taking their own lives. Moreover, in most
of the cases, women feel ashamed to even openly protest against these things because of our conservative
society, and even if they do, the culprits often push their crime to a next level by threatening, blackmailing
or even throwing acid onto the one who protests. To support these statements, numerous incidents of
suicides have aroused these days, as it becomes more and more aggravating for them to live with these
painful experiences and not being able to express their feelings just because of fear to be harassed even
further.
It is also not true that women are only harassed outside, they are also harassed or physically abused in their
own home. Domestic violence has been an orthodox issue in Bangladesh since ages. In recent times there
has been many assurances from the government on women safety in private domains. They have also taken
multiple initiatives to combat domestic violence but it didn’t provide much convincing results yet.
Tragically, harassment against women in public spaces still remains a neglected issue to a great extent,
with only a few laws and policies in place to prevent and address it. This leaves us to ask ourselves - is it
really difficult to provide safety to women in this modern world?
All in all, women safety has been a head scratching issue for both the government and the society where
very few has been able to come up with a strategic framework to combat this issue eloquently.
