1. Notes
The service documentation is intended for maintenance, servicing and repair of the
film viewer by trained and authorized service staff.

Attention:
Before disconnecting the film viewer from the power supply, ensure that first all the
data of the R2 System will be saved. Therefore read in the instructions to the R2
System, otherwise there is risk of lost data !

Caution:
In some cases of servicing it is necessary, that the unit keeps connected to the power
supply, while the unit is opened.
Danger ! Components under voltage ! Danger to life !
You will get an electric shock, if you touch live parts.
Avoid the contact with live parts!
All the safety measures required for the protection of the own person or other persons
have to be observed.
If the unit has to be disconnected from the power supply, disconnect the mains plug.
Ensure the unit cannot be reconnected to power supply by a third party (remove fuses).

Attention:
After finishing servicing work and repairs reattach all the panellings to the unit and
reconnect all the earthing conductors.
If this note is ignored, there is the risk of an electric shock !

Attention:
If the switch panel has to be opened, so first you have to loose the cable trees entering
into the switch panel. Each of these cable trees is secured with cable strips behind the
lateral panellings. When closing the switch panel, so these cable trees have to be
pulled out again and secured with cable strips. Cables may not get in touch with
moving parts, e. g. the belt.

Important:
The service technician has to send a written report to the user about all work
performed on the unit.

Important note:
If this X-ray film viewer is set to Multi-User mode (message „P“ will appear on the
LED display of the switch panel after switching on the film viewer), then the service
technician has to ask the supervisor / administrator for at least one user code for
operating the film viewer.

Important note:
This X-ray film viewer contains a R2 ImageChecker Display computer. This computer
needs time for start up when the X-ray film viewer is switched on by turning on the
On/Off switch „Main-Power“. In the other case, before turning off the complete film
viewer, you have first to shut down the computer and wait a short moment before shut
off power.
CD-Nr.: M1R2X-251102 2
MAMMOLUX R2 GEN-II-B Service

For the exact handling in case of shut down or start up please read chapter 9 „Start up
and Shut down of the film viewer“ in the operating instructions.
In some cases of servicing or repairs it will be necessary to turn off and turn on the
complete film viewer for several times in short time intervals. In those cases only
concerning the belt system of the film viewer we recommend the following
measurement: After the Display computer has been shut down and the film viewer has
been switched off, then unplug the power cable only at the Display computer or unplug
the supply cable from the UPS at the chassis mount 230V In plug.
Now, with the disconnected Display computer the X-ray film viewer may be turned on
and off without waiting periods for start up and shut down.
After servicing, and before setting the film viewer into service again, you have to
reconnect the supply cable to the Display computer when the film viewer is shut-off.

Note:
In the service documentation and in the wiring diagrams there are key combinations
mentioned for extra functions of the unit. These key combinations also include the
clear key „C“, which has to be actuated together with the other keys (like the schema :
<key „C“> + <key> + <key>). The keys of each key combination have to be depressed
simultaneously. In order to make the input easier, we recommend the following
procedure:
1. At first, actuate the clear key „C“ with the left hand and keep this key
depressed.
2. Now press the other both keys of the key combination simultaneously with
the right hand.
3. After then, release all keys again, simultaneously.

2. Maintenance
1.) Maintenance intervals: One maintenance every half year has to be done by
authorized service staff.
2.) Procedure: Checking the unit according to the list of maintenance
work and repairs (see chapter 8).
The results have to be sent to the user in writing.

5. Changing the battery

The SPS contains a lithium battery for securing the stored position values.
At the end of the battery´s lifetime the battery must be replaced by an original battery.
The battery´s lifetime means the time duration, where the battery is ready for securing
the stored values, while the supply voltage for the SPS has been switched off (for the
duration of lifetime see chapter 17 „Technical data“ in the operating instructions).
If the battery´s lifetime is ending, while the film viewer is switched off, so all the
stored position values get lost. Then the reference run has to be done. If the reference
run does not start automatically, the reference has to be done manually as described in
chapter 11 „Reference run“ in the operating instructions.
In order to prevent this and the expenditure of time for the reference run and
adjustment works, the battery has to be changed early before the end of its lifetime.

h Therefore the battery has regularly to be changed every 2 years. g

With respect to the battery, the unit must not be exposed to deep temperatures for the
duration of transport and storage.
The following has to be observed:
• Replace battery when the supply voltage is switched off (the data will be secured
without battery for further 3 days by a gold cap).
• Never short-circuit the battery or recharge it! Danger of overheating or
explosion!
• Dispose the battery in an environmental conscious manner. Do not dispose with
the household rubbish!

For changing the battery proceed as follows:

1. If the film viewer is switched on then first shut down the R2 System (Display
computer) as described in the operating instructions, after this turn off the On/Off
switch „Main-Power“.
2. Open the upper rear side panelling and disconnect the earthing conductor inside the
panelling. (Attention: Panelling is fixed with socket pins at the bottom.)
3. Locate the SPS and unplug the outer terminals at the SPS (terminals X1, X4, X5
and X8) and unplug the cables to Display button and R2 Display PC.

Fig. C-1

4. At the outer ends, where the terminals has been removed in the step before, try
now to loosen and then remove the blue cover from the SPS. But do not use any
sharp tool, in order to prevent damages to the SPS.
5. Now locate the battery. There you will find a thread around the battery as a help for
removing the battery. Draw the ends of this thread together and pull out the battery
together with the thread. Do not use any sharp tool for battery remove.

Attention! First let cool the fluorescent lamps before changing.
In order to guarantee a homogeneous illumination of the viewing area according to
DIN 6856 Part 1, all fluorescent lamps should be changed completely at the same time.

12.) Restore the operatability of the unit in the reverse order.

Attention:
• Restore all earthing conductors!
• When inserting the pane C take care that the edges of the pane do
not get hung up on the edge of the belt (slide a foil between the belt
and the pane) and ensure that the upper and lower edges of the pane
are lying in the U-beams!

13.) After switching on the unit again, you may now turn on the illumination to check the
function of the fluorescent lamps. Do not drive the belt.

14.) Finally you have to press the key combination <Clear key> + <2> + <8>. The belt will
drive now back to the last belt position ( position 85).

Important note:

7. Calibration and adjustments

The MAMMOLUX is provided with several extra functions, which permit the
required adjustments and make the service easier.

7.1 Types and requirement of adjustments

In the following, types of calibrations and adjustments are listed up, which absolutely
have to be carried out in order to ensure a perfect functioning of the stored-program-
control with all the other electronic and mechanical components. The undermentioned
informations show, when the several operations have to be done.

7.1.1 Reference run for the belt positions

After switching on, the film viewer needs its start position. Therefore, if the unit has
no position stored, the unit starts automatically with the reference run in direction to
the beginning of the belt and stops at position 01. If the reference run does not start
automatically, the reference run has to be done manually as described in chapter 11
„Reference run“ in the operating instructions. The storage of the actual belt postion is
secured by the battery in the SPS.

The reference run of the belt is necessary for example in the following events:
• if the film viewer is turned off and the battery is defective,
• after changing the belt,
• after cranking the belt manually while the film viewer is turned off,
• if the actual-value potentiometer P1 or its connection with the belt drum has
been changed,
• after changing the SPS.

7.1.2 Calibration of shutters

This calibration mode will be started by pressing a key combination (see chapter 7.2).
The calibration proceed is described in the statements there. With this calibration the
movement of the shutters is adjusted. Calibrating the shutter carrier is necessary e. g.
after changing components for the movement of the shutters, replacement of the
Master board CPU or in the event of wrong adjustment of the shutter potentiometers.

CD-Nr.: M1R2X-251102 10
MAMMOLUX R2 GEN-II-B Service

7.2 Calibration of the shutters

The calibration of the shutters is absolutely necessary to ensure for the four shutters a
limitation of their mobile range and protection from collision. Carry out the following
steps:

7.2.1 Mounting hints for the potentiometers P3 to P6 of the shutter carrier

If you have replaced a shutter motor assy or a potentiometer of the shutter system then
check first the correct potentiometer setting before calibrating the shutter system.
With the shutters completely opened, the centre-tap (measuring point 2) of the
potentiometers P3 to P6 should be of the values listed in the following table. For the
measuring the potentiometers must be disconnected from the shutters control board.

7.2.2 The calibration procedure

By actuating the key combination <Clear key> + <6> + <8> simultaneously, the
calibration mode for the shutters is obtained. A flashing „99“ appears on the LED
display of the switch panel. The shutters are moved now automatically by the
calibration program.

At first the reference window 1 will be set in the left upper corner of the viewing area.
Then the reference window 2 will be set in the right lower corner of the viewing area.
After this all the four shutters will be opened again automatically.

reference
window 1

window 2

The calibration will be finished, when the LED in key „Func“ stops flashing and the
display shows the belt segment number again.
Now the calibration of the shutters has been done.

Important note:
After the calibration of the shutters the stored formats are all cleared. So the user has to
carry out the format storage of the memory keys as described in the operating
instructions.

7.3 Hints for the replacement of the Master board CPU

7.3.1 Attention to the shutter system

If you have to replace the Master board CPU of the switch panel or if you replace the
complete switch panel, then after the replacement you must also calibrate the shutters
to ensure proper functioning.
Attention!
This film viewer has the feature of automatic Shutter-by-frame storage. If the film
viewer normally is switched on (and in case of a unit set to Multi-user mode a correct
user code has been entered), the belt and the shutters will be moved to the last stored
position, if necessary.
In case of the replacement of the Master board CPU or the complete switch panel, it
may be possible that old belt and shutter positions are still kept stored to the Master
board CPU, e. g. a board that has been already used in another film viewer before. In
this case, switching on the film viewer again after the replacement of the board would
probably start the belt and the shutters to any undefined position.
This may cause damaging of the shutter system!

In order to prevent this damage you have to proceed step by step as follows:
1. Unplug the cables to the shutter motors before switching on the film viewer again
after the replacement work.
2. Then start up the film viewer. In case of a unit set to Multi-user mode also a
correct user code has to be entered using the numerical keys. If the belt moves
please wait until the belt stops and keeps standing.
3. Now press the key combination <Clear key> + <6> + <Store> in order to delete
all stored Shutter-by-frame positions for the actual user.
4. Then shut down the film viewer.
5. Reconnect the shutter cables to the shutter control board.
6. After this, switch on the film viewer again. In case of a unit set to Multi-user mode
also insert a correct user code.
7. Now you have to carry out the calibration of the shutters, read chapter 7.2.

7.3.2 Setting of the maximum number of belt segments

If you have replaced the Master board CPU of the switch panel or replaced the
complete switch panel, then after replacement you have to set the Master board to the
maximum number of belt segments. This will ensure that the user may only insert
correct segment numbers to the numerical keys.
For setting press key combination <Clear key> + <6> + <7> simultaneously. The
LED display starts flashing. Now insert the number sequence 8 5 (= belt segment 85
for MAMMOLUX). Finally the Clear key has to be actuated.

7.5 Overload protection for the belt motor

In case of overload of the belt motor the speed regulator will reduce the motor current
to the value of current limitting (adjusted by DIP switch setting). In case of overload
the red LED "Overload" will light (see chapter 7.7).
After 10 seconds of overload the speed regulator shuts up the belt motor. In order to
reset the speed regulator, the film viewer has to be shut down and turn on again.

7.9 Software programming

In the front side of the X-ray film viewer you will find a SubD socket located in the
left black side cover aside the viewing area (see figure).

SubD socket
(for programming)

Fig. C-9

In case of software updates to the SPS programm, the Master board CPU software or
the Shutter control software you can connect the programmer cable to this SubD
socket. But before programming over this SubD connection the SPS control must be
set into the "Programming Mode".
Therefore press key combination <Clear key> + <7> + <0> simultaneously on the
control panel. Also read paragraph "Programming Mode" in chapter 7.11 "SPS Display
and the functions of the buttons".

And also ensure that the switch on the left side of the SPS is set into the lower
position.

Attention!
Do not stop or interrupt the programming process when updating the software of

7.10 Manually cranking the film carrier belt

In some events, the film carrier belt has to be cranked manually.

Before cranking you have to loosen the clutch at the belt motor.
For both working steps you need the all-purpose tool.

The All-purpose tool

Open the left side panelling and disconnect the earthing conductor inside the panelling.
You will find now the all-purpose tool in the inside of the frame work fixed on the
bottom beam (see figure C-10).

Attention!
After the use of the all-purpose tool please reattach the tool back to the frame work
and secure with the fixing strips. Be sure the tool is fixed in the correct position as
shown in the figure. The adapter side of the tool must be placed into the hole of the
frame work.

Loosen the clutch at the belt motor

Before cranking the film carrier belt you must loosen the clutch of the belt motor.
Therefore take the all-purpose tool and stick the lever of the tool onto one tooth of the
clutch nut as shown in the figure. Now loosen the clutch by turning the clutch nut
about 180° clockwise. Remember the angle you turn.
Later, after cranking the belt, retighten the clutch by turning back the clutch nut about
180° counterclockwise. But do not turn with excessive force and not more than the
angle you have needed for loosening the clutch nut.

In case of malfunctions:
Locate the defects later, when the unit is opened, by using the
wiring diagrams and the service documents. If necessary, replace
defective parts.

6.) The illumination and the brightness regulation work properly?

Measure the luminous density cd/m2 in center of viewing area.

(At full brightness, approx. 6.800 cd/m2 for MAMMOLUX is good,
approx. 7.400 cd/m2 for MAMMOLUX XL).

If the luminous density is not sufficient, fit unit with new

fluorescent lamps. If the brightness regulation is defective: Replace
the HF governor or the rotary control.

7.) Are main belt and the film holders in good condition?

Move the belt field by field and carry out visual inspection. Check
every holder by loading with a film.

If the main belt or the film holders are damaged, so that a proper
use is no longer possible, replace the main belt.

On opened unit. (Unit is connected to power supply!)

The following procedures may only be performed by trained and authorized service
staff. All the safety measures required for the protection of the service staff and other
persons have to be observed.

For the next procedures the unit has to be opened now. Proceed as follows:

• Run the belt to the revision fields at the end of the belt and stop the belt by turning

9.) Is the unit provided with the all-purpose tool for the emergency
transport device?

Check it and ask the staff.

If no all-purpose tool can be found, provide the customer with a

new tool.

10.) Are all the screwed connections still secure?

Check, whether seals are broken.

If loosen screw connections have been found, retighten them. Make

sure that the correct component position will be observed.

11.) Is the chain tight enough?

Visual inspection. Chain K (Fig. C-19, p. 33) must not sag below
the lower chain wheel.

The chain K may be tightened via the adjustment devices V at the

left and right side of the lower drum. The dimensions A and B must
be equal. (See control dimensions on page 33.)

Caution:
The main belt is prestressed. But the chain must not be opened.
The prestress contains danger of injuring !

CD-Nr.: M1R2X-251102 29

12.) Do all drums move freely? All bearings run quietly? Can any
spark discharge be heard?

Perform visual and audial inspection.

Therefore reconnect the unit to the power supply, switch on the unit
and let the belt run.

Observe measures of precaution! Components under voltage!

Do the drums not run freely, find the cause. If necessary replace the
drums. If spark discharges can be heard, the antistatic brushes have
to be proved exactly at measure point 15.

13.) Are the initiators S6 and S7 operative?

Check the air gap and the functioning. The air gap between the
initiators (Part A, Fig. C-14) and the boundary belt of the main belt
B should be approx. 1 mm.
1 mm

A B
