mostly in the area of water resources sector, In the domain of
investigation for foundations on soils and rocks and
invesgiatioins for the construction material like concrete, soit
geosynthetics and Rock fill.

We aa Use of Micro-surfacing for the renewal course, maintenance and repair
oe on National Highways.
b Ministry in its Specifications for Road and Bridge Works (5 Revision) has included
Ae Micro-surfacing as surface sealing treatment to improve skid resistance, surface durability,
SY oe seal fine and medium cracks. It is applied when structurally sound pavement surface shows
(signs of premature ageing, aggregate luss, cracking, high degree of polishing ele. Section 514
of the MORTH Specifications may he referred which prescribes guidelines for its 9 for low
and medium trafficked road. In this regard, Indian Roads Congress has published IRC:SP:81-
2008 ‘Tentative Specifications for Slurry Seal and Micro-surfacing’ which may also be

C-" 2. It has been observed that Micro-surfacing is stillstor-be"adoptéd™for repair and
maintenance by the implementing agencies in spite uf its udvuntuges, possibly due to luck of
awareness and also some contractual obligations which is restricting the adoption of this
technology due to compulsory renewal clause by the hot mix method in contracts,
x In view of this, it has been decided in the Ministry that Micro- ‘surfacing may be used
a5 preventive maintenance/renewal treatment ag provoribed in the:
a continuous stretch which qualifies for periodical renew. criteria for the selection
of stretches under Micro-surfacing shall be the same as that of Periodical Renewal stipulated
in Ministry's cireular No. re lated 26” September, 2002.
4. The implementing agencies may ensure that a least 25-30% of total eligible length for
Periodical Renewal, preferably in a continuous stretch is covered by micro-surfacing or other
similar type of treatment in Future.
