Question 1:
Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of having the same product
range shown in all IKEA catalogues around the world?
Answer 1:
Just like every other thing, having same product range in all the
catalogues around the world also have both, advantages and
disadvantages. A big advantage of having same product range is that
they don’t have to worry about lots of supplier, have same range
around the world they can easily get the raw material from one part of
the world or the other. But, not all the cultures around the world don’t
like same products hence it’ll affect the IKEA`s sales this would be a
disadvantage. Different cultures have different preferences when it
comes to designing their home hence have a same catalogue around
the world won`t be much useful. Also, same catalogue designs cannot
be used around the world, i.e. if IKEA`s catalogue has picture of a family
including women, it will go just fine in EU countries but in KSA they’ll
face legal penalties for putting a picture of woman. IKEA should do
complete analysis of market and country`s law to avoid such grave
consequences.
Question 2:
The catalogue is the most important element in IKEA`s global marketing
planning. Discuss if there could be some cultural differences in the
effectiveness of the catalogue as a marketing tool.
Answer 2:
For IKEA, their catalogue is not just a complete list of products but also
a shopping tool that acts as an interior designer guide for the
customers. In most cultures, people decorate their housing according
to their likings. In such cultures, catalogue is one of the most effective
marketing tool. But, in some cultures rather than designing on their
own, people prefer architects or professional interior designers to
decorate their houses. In these, catalogue doesn’t prove to be an
effective marketing tool.
Question 3:
Explain some cultural differences which are illustrated by the two
different illustrations of the same product (from the Danish and
Chinese IKEA catalogues).
Answer 3:
Illustration of Chinese and Danish room in IKEA`s catalogue show the
cultural differences in both countries. Illustration of Danish room shows
a spacious room with 2 children on the other hand, Chinese illustration
shows a comparatively smaller room and just one kid, Chinese one kid
policy to reduce their population.
