1 INTRODUCTION

The ability to transport goods quickly, safely, economically, and reliably in urban
areas has a major impact on the attractiveness, prosperity, and quality of life of
cities and regions, it is a field that receives little attention in comparison to
personal and public transportation. But with ongoing increases in globalized trade,
the movement of freight and logistics and their impact on regional competitiveness
is receiving more consideration at all levels of government and society. According
to the World Bank, the performance of India’s logistics network ranked 24 th in the
world, ahead of countries such as the Indonesia and Singapore, but behind USA
and Germany, suggesting room for improvement. Trade and logistics are
especially important in India, where over half of the province’s GDP is derived
from import and export trade activities. Consequently, supporting the efficient
movement of this trade is crucial in maintaining a competitive and attractive
environment for investment in a rapidly globalizing economy.

But from changing freight and logistics processes to broad regional trends in
population, employment, and freight growth, significant challenges exist that stand
to seriously restrict the flow of goods in the Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor.
India is not alone in facing these challenges, as many other regions around the
world struggle to accommodate increasing trade flows. A promising solution that
has emerged in international logistics for improving the efficiency of these
networks is the creation of dedicated centres for the shipment of goods within and
between urban areas called ‘Freight villages. These facilities present a land use
solution to freight and logistics problems and have the potential to deliver
important productivity, efficiency, and sustainability benefits.

1.1 AIM

The aim of the project is to analyze the existing hinterland of the multimodal
terminals coming along Delhi-Mumbai Industrial corridor and propose Freight
Village concept along the Western transport corridor and its influence zone.

1.2 SCOPE

This research will study the challenges that the existing pattern of logistic hub
faces and analyze whether Freight Village concept is going to make a remarkable
change in the logistic narrative of India in future and check its effectiveness and
feasibility.

1.3 OBJECTIVE

 To study about the concept of Freight Village.

 To study about the existing proposal of Freight Villages in India.

 To explore the existing proposals of Multi modal logistic hubs along Delhi-
Mumbai Industrial corridor.

 To propose a model of Freight Village that could be possibly located along

the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor.

1.4 FUNCTIONS

 It will serve as a cargo hub, and a centre for aggregation and value addition.

 It will also provide support to stimulate development of a professional

logistics industry along Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor.

 The main function is management and utilization of various modes of

transport, synergizing them and decongesting the existing mode of
transportation.

2
1.5 LIMITATIONS

 Only few Freight Village appraisal studies are publicly available.

 The methods used to assess the warehousing and logistic facilities are
usually restricted to conventional financial or social appraisal methods that
use descriptive terms and have quantification problems.

 There is no one standardized method to prescribe the concept, it changes

with respective to the locality.

 Applicability of the approach is limited due to the peculiarities inherent in

different Freight villages around the world.

1.6 STAKEHOLDERS/FEATURES OF FREIGHT VILLAGE-

 Multimodal services

 Warehousing

 Distribution

 Intermodal terminal

 Customs

 Freight forwarders

Generally, criteria chosen for setting up the Freight village-

 Infrastructure

 Labor costs

 Proximity to customers

 Community and site characteristics
