Concrete Liqu!d Retaining Structures, J. Keith Green and P h i l i p H. Perkins.
Applied Science Publishers, L t d . , Exxex, England. 1979. 356 pages (U.S.$55.00) This book, w r i t t e n p r i m a r i l y for p r a c t i c i n g engineers, should be useful also to advanced engineering students, concrete technologists, building scien- tists. I t c o n s t i t u t e s a single volume dealing with the important aspects of concrete l i q u i d r e t a i n i n g structures required by both designers and p r a c t i c i n g engineers. Part 1 sets out recommended design p r i n c i p l e s and a number of sel- ected examples in the design of l i q u i d r e t a i n i n g structures are presented in the form of detailed c a l c u l a t i o n s . Part 2 contains seven chapters and provides information on the s p e c i f i c a t i o n of materials and recommendations for work on site. Detailed discussions on d u r a b i l i t y and impermeability which are essent- ial factors in all concrete l i q u i d r e t a i n i n g structures are given. Information is provided on the many problems which can arise on s i t e , and advice is given on how to deal with these in a practical way. There is a chapter on q u a l i t y c o n t r o l , performance t e s t i n g and notes on repair methods. Constructive com- ments are made on the Code of Practice for water r e t a i n i n g structures (BS.5337) Each chapter includes a bibliography, although i n d i v i d u a l references are not usually cited. The book concludes with four Appendixes which include l i s t s of important codes and standards from many countries (including U.S.), and a com- prehensive index. The t e x t is i l l u s t r a t e d with numerous diagrams and photo- graphs. D.M. Roy
