6. Below is a representation of a car’s axles through cornering. The total axle load (W) must be
distributed across the 2 tyres (Fz). During cornering, the distribution changes, the total force remains
the same – this phenomenon is known as load transfer.

The chart below shows a tyre model, where the tyre lateral force (Fy) is related to the tyre vertical force
(Fz). This relationship is essential in understanding load transfer as it dictates the maximum cornering
force the axle can produce (which enables the car to turn).
