Adjectives

In order to clearly make the student understand what an adjective is before we go into some more
detail about it. We need to ensure they are clear with what a noun is. If the student is unable to tell
you what a noun is a simple definition would suffice.

Noun: A person, place or a thing is a noun. Examples: person: Teacher, shopkeeper

Place: Petrol Pump, Shop

Thing: Bell

Try to as far as possible use examples the children would relate to. Don’t ask the child if he knows
what this is or what that is. Use your own experience of having lived in the Mendori area and try to
find big examples that every one would have seen and these children would definitely have
experienced like shop, school, teacher, bell etc. Try to also inculcate at this point that a sentence
might have two or more nouns. Eg. The teacher is teaching the children. Ram and Shyam are playing
together.

Now if they are clear as to what a noun is follow the exercise below

In the sentences below mark the noun

1. Ram went for a walk.

2. The teacher is teaching.
3. The teacher rang the bell.
4. There is a petrol pump 1km away.
5. He is taking his dog for a walk.

Now a basic description of what an adjective could be given to the student. An adjective is a word
that describes a noun. Use a simple sentence like I like to eat apples. Now describe the apple in as
vivid detail as possible for the student to imagine. The apple is red, juicy, tasty etc. Then bring their
attention to these words you used to describe the apple and point out that these are adjectives that
you used to describe the noun apple. Such way of using simple words and giving as many
descriptions as possible will allow the student to clearly understand the function of an adjective and
will help them see what kinds of words are adjectives. Eg. The girl is dancing gracefully. The girl is
wearing a beautiful dress. The shop is small.

Such a basic understanding of the concept of adjectives should be present with the student. The
further differentiation of adjectives into limiting, comparative or superlative might not have yet been
understood or taught.
