Monica Hey Andrew what's the matter?
Andrew I really want to go to the music festival in Leeds this weekend - but I'm
not allowed to. My parents say I'm still too young.
Monica Oh, that's awful! I had the same problem last week - my parents didn't
allow me to go to Liverpool championship final.

2.(a) A Conversation
Between Two Friends Andrew Actually, my parents normally let me do things. I can stay out until
midnight at weekends.

Monica Really? That's cool! My parents never let me do anything. Sometimes I
feel school's better than home - at least we're allowed to breathe at
school!
Andrew Does your dad allow you to stay up late to watch TV?
Monica Well, yeah, at times - but only if I've done all my homework.

Last Wednesday at the office, I was seated at my desk working at my computer
when suddenly I felt rather sick. I got very hot all of a sudden and I had a terrible
headache. My eyes were hurting terribly, too. So I called and made an appointment
to see the doctor. That afternoon I went along to the doctor's and he asked me lots
of questions. Then he asked me to take off my blouse and he checked me over. He
listened to my chest, looked in my eyes and in my ears. When he had finished
examining me he said, "Well, you've got flu". He wrote out a prescription for some

enough, after that I felt a lot better and I was able to go back to work. But the funny
thing is I don't think I got better because of the medicine at all. I think I got well
just because I had a three-day rest from working with my computers!

Brenda Ah, there you are, honey. Are you feeling better?
George Well, a little bit. Anyway, it's good to see you.
Brenda Here, I've brought you some fruit and a bottle of lemon juice.

Brenda They seem to be doing things for you. Did they tell you how long you're
likely to be here?
George I asked but they told me it was still too early to say.
Brenda Well, they can't make you stay for very long. What else have you been
doing?
George Well, I've been speaking to the guy in the next bed. His name's Terence.
He took the same course as I'm doing and he's a sales director now. He's
in here with an ulcer.
Brenda Well, I'd love you to improve with your course, but I'm not very
enthusiastic at the thought of you getting an ulcer. Oh, by the way, I
intended to bring you some of your textbooks so that you could catch up
with your work, but I forgot. You must be missing a lot by being here.
George Good grief, I can't have missed all that much. I've only been here for one
day, and I don't feel like studying right now. It's a good idea, though, and I
might feel a bit more energetic tomorrow.
Brenda All right, I won't forget to bring them next time. Oh, is there anything else
that you'd like me to bring you?
George Yes, you might bring me a few packets of chewing-gums and sweets.
Having a bad chest means going without cigarettes and I need some kind
of substitute.
Brenda Yes, if you can go without cigarettes for some days, you might as well try
and give it up once and for all.

UNIT 11
The shopping fever. Some shopping is essential. It can also be relaxing. For a lot
of people it is also a pastime, often a very enjoyable one. We have even come up
with a new phrase, retail therapy , to describe the fantastic feelings we can get
from shopping. Buying things makes a lot of us feel good. However, it can go
badly wrong too when for certain people spending gets out of hand. Without a
doubt, we live in a very ´spend-happy´ society. Generally, we are spending more
than we earn and a lot of people are finding themselves in debt.

11.(a) Shopping For some people, though, shopping can become a real problem. It can turn into a
(Listen & read) serious condition in which people feel unhappy unless they are buying something.
Most of the time they don't need the things they are purchasing; more often they
don't even like them. 23-year-old singer, "Ms S", claims that she is a "shopaholic",
although she doesn't want to admit she has a problem. "I just like to look good all
the time", she says. "I love special clothes and I have a special passion for shoes.
I've got 225 pairs!" She says that she doesn't have to spend much. Her shopping
spree can cost her anything from 20p to 15,000 pounds, but she says she needs to
purchase something every day. Oddly enough, it was being a shopaholic that gave
"Ms S" the chance to become a singer. She was in a chat room for shopaholics on
the Internet when she was discovered by a member of a new pop group. They had
just written a song called Retail Therapy about the risk of shopping addiction. "We
wrote the song because we've got friends who've been in that situation. We've
witnessed what can happen. They get all the credit cards and then shop
themselves into a real mess," they said. The group went to the chat room because
they were searching for an ordinary person who understood shopaholics to be
their lead singer. They didn't fancy an actress or a well-known singer, just
someone that other women could relate to.

Scam were very glad to find "Ms S", but even though she has recorded the song
with them, they still haven't met her. The group want the song and the issue of
shopping addiction to remain more important than the people involved. They don't
want to meet "Ms S" and spend time getting to know one another. "Ms S" goes to
the recording studio alone, and all their communication, including interviews for
the press, is done via mobile. "It's working out well for me, says "Ms S", "I can do
all these interviews and things while I'm out shopping!"

they were searching for an ordinary person who understood shopaholics to be
their lead singer. They didn't fancy an actress or a well-known singer, just
someone that other women could relate to.

Scam were very glad to find "Ms S", but even though she has recorded the song

In ancient Egypt, medicine men had various ways of treating headaches. They
used to tie a ceramic crocodile, which was filled with herbs, to the head of the
patient. The reasons for this are not clear to us today.

In the Middle Ages, there were no hospitals and only people who were well off
were able to go to doctors. But the people who did visit doctors were normally
cured with leeches - small, black creatures that suck blood. They were put on the
patient's body near the affected area. For people who suffered from headaches,
the leech was usually placed on the neck.

These treatments were probably a bit painful, and they may seem very weird to us
now. Just picture what dentists used to do to people who had toothache!
