Philosophical Perspective

I.Introduction : A search for answers to the nature of the self and the
qualities that define it can be traced back to the great philosophers.
Philosophy employs the inquisitive mind to discover the ultimate
causes, reasons and principles of everything. It goes beyond scientific
investigation by exploring all areas knowledge such as religion, psychology,
politics, physics and even medicine. Hence , the etymological definition of
philosophy “Love of wisdom “ could pertain to the desire for truth by
formulating never ending questions to provide answers to every inquiry about
the nature human existence

I. Objectives
At the end of this activity, you can:
1. Explain why it is essential to understand the self
2. Describe and discuss the different notions of the self from the
points-of view of the various philosophers across time and place
3. Compare and contrast how the self has been represented in different
philosophical schools
4. Examine one’s self against the different views of self that were
discussed in the class
5. Develop your own philosophy of the self
