DEVELOPMENT PLANNING
1. PROJECT NAME BEEKEEPING AS MECHANISM OF BIODIVERSITY
CONSERVATION AND LIVELIHOODS IMPROVEMENT
2. APPLICANT OF THE Beekeepers Association, Forestry Department
PROJECT / PROPONENT OF
THE PROJECT
3. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The nature of the Gabala district is mainly composed of mountain and
plain forests, rich with endemic and relict plants, fruit and berry trees
and bushes, namely breech, chestnut, walnut, hazelnut oak,
hornbeam, alder, wing nut, and other trees and bushes. Of all the
listed plants, chestnut is widely spread in the district forests naturally,
and agriculturally cultivated in small and medium level farms and
households. According to statistics data Gabala is the largest grower of
chestnut in the country. 594.4 tons out of 614 is produced in the
Sheki-Zagatala economic region and Gabala accounts for 30.84%
(183.3 tons) of regional production followed by Zagatala (23.7%) and
Sheki (18.5%). Bee- keeping has also been a developing sector over
2008-2018 in the Sheki-Zagatala ER.Rich forest area, huge summer
pastures, conventional agriculture practices (low pesticide use in
agriculture) and high number of tourists create fertile environment for
the development of honey sector in Gabala.According to statistics,
Gabala accounts for 9744 units of bee families that makes up 9.6 % of
the regional stock (101557) which is the second lowest indicator in the
economic region after Oguz (6%).Compared to Zagatala and Balaken
districts, beekeeping is less developed here which could be promoted
as a highly beneficial green entrepreneurship sector that will improve
ecological sustainability of the area. Chestnut is a valuable species for
beekeeping, because, with its unique aromatic taste, chestnut honey is
highly beneficial against many diseases in the body with its high
minerals, strong antioxidant properties and antibacterial properties.
However, farmers are less interested in chestnut orchards due to a
longer period of fruit bearing (5 -6 years) than hazelnut (4 years),
acacia and other plants. Although a chestnut tree grows quite slowly
compared to other species, it evidently lives for very long time, even
some trees reaching until 500 years. It has also very strong root system
that keeps the soil from degradation and play huge role when fighting
against land erosion, deforestation and flood risks. The purpose of
the project is promoting green entrepreneurship through the
combination of chestnut growing and beekeeping. Beekeeping
products get more value if bees are fed with one type of plant variety,
one of them is a chestnut. Beekeepers who are interested in producing
high quality ,ecologically clean honey products at the same time
getting involved in environment conservation activities, will be
selected by forestry department as target groups.Deforestated land
areas belonging to state land foundation will be allocated for the
selected 10 beekeepers. Each of them will be provided with chestnut
seedlings to establish chestnut orchards on these areas. The
beekeepers will be trained by experts on chestnut growing and
maintenance technologies. Within the first five years, beekeepers will
be provided with fertilizers, pesticides, irrigation systems and all
necessary orchard maintenance equipment. When trees reach fruit
bearing age, beekeepers will be allowed to put their beehives in their
orchards in order bees can collect pollen and produce pure organic
chestnut honey.Furthermore, beekeepers will be supported in terms
of packaging and logistics tools to promoting their products in local
and foreign markets.
