For years, the debate on where was the first mass in the country was held continues as more

and more
evidences are being brought up to pinpoint the exact site of the mass. As of today, Limasawa is the place
believed to be where the first mass of the Philippines was held at. This place was first identified by
Antonio Pigafetta, who said that it happened on March 31, 1521.

First point to prove that Limasawa was the exact location on where the first mass of the Philippines was
held was that the route of Magellan that was describe by Pigafetta coincides with the description of the
route in Albo’s log book; Albo was the flagship pilot of Magellan. Another detail that was mentioned by
Pigafetta was that the island of Mazaua resembles the actual position of Limasawa as of today. The
account also said that the first mass was held in an island lying off he southwestern tip of leyte. Masao is
not an island but a Barangay in Butuan city located in a delta among the Agusan River. We must consider
that Pigafetta is deemed as the only credible primary source of reports.

These evidences states that Limasawa has more sufficient evidences as stated in most accounts of
Pigafetta for he is the most reliable primary source of information as a witness of Magellan’s voyage The
information that were stated were facts extracted and further analyzed according from the journals of
Antonio Pigaffeta.
