Struggles I have experienced during adolescence and young adulthood
Puberty
- This affected me personally during my adolescent years because it was during this
time that certain characteristics of my body changed. Despite knowing about these
changes years before it occurred, it is still different to actually experience it. It is a
struggle for me because I’ve come to learn that certain actions like eating junk food
or not having enough rest can affect me more now that I’ve reached puberty. Acne,
cramps, and the like were difficult because at the time because I did not know how
to cope with these new changes.
Stress
- School, extracurricular activities, and free time are sometimes not managed well
which leads to stress. Sometimes, school and extra-curricular activities prove to be
draining and demanding. Because of this, I have trouble managing my time which
leads to cramming and stress.
Self Esteem
- Because of the changes brought by puberty, self esteem issues develop. Social
media gives people an ideal of what a certain body type or look should be. I
developed self-esteem issues because there will always be someone better than
what you are and what you have with the rise of social media and self-
consciousness.
Competition
- Although this doesn’t necessarily mean what it says on the dictionary, its
implications are the same. Competition within peers is a struggle during adolescent
years because everyone is trying to make themselves heard. This can only be done
by being significant or different, which sometimes leads to an unhealthy rivalry. This
is a struggle for me because despite not really wanting to be the best of the best, I
still try to be at par with my peers so that I wouldn’t look inadequate.
Peer Pressure
- I struggle with peer pressure as an adolescent because every day, I am pressured to
do my very best in absolutely everything. Although this is good, it still causes
unnecessary stress. I believe that doing one’s best without exhausting themselves is
important in growth. However, peer pressure makes people overwork themselves
which takes up time and effort that could be better spent on other activities.
