TEACHER: Rocio Gonzalez DATE: October 1, 2018

OBJECTIVE: To convert decimals to scientific notation GRADE LEVEL: 8th grade

Objective/Purpose: TEKS 8th grade (2) Number and operations. The student applies mathematical process standards to represent and use real
numbers in a variety of forms. The student is expected to:
(C)  convert between standard decimal notation and scientific notation;
This may help them with real life world problems to make larger or smaller numbers be shorter

Materials/Resources/Equipment Needed:
 Foldable
 Cellphone or Laptop
 Paper
 Handout

Instructional delivery:
 Students must know what standard form (decimal is) & their powers of 10.
 Groups of 3-4
 Foldable

Anticipatory Set (ENGAGE):

Students will form in groups of 3-4 and they will be assigned roles: time keeper, recorder, reporter and facilitator. The groups will be
randomly picked by choosing a popsicle stick with the student’s names. Once they are in groups and they have their roles. They will be
given a handout with a cellphone. The handout will have a message, “Hello Ms. Gonzalez, can you please tell me when our homework is
due?” Students will have to shorten the message. They will be given 2 minutes to shorten the message. After the report will share the
response that the group made. This will help students to understand that long messages (Numbers) can be shorten with abbreviations
(Scientific notation.)

(EXPLORE):
Students will need their cellphones or laptops to answer the following questions, so they can get the exact answer in days or miles. So,
the students will see the large numbers.
1. What is the age of the Earth in days?
Answer: 1,658,000,000,000
2. How far is the earth from the sun in miles?
Answer: 929,600,000

These questions are to demonstrate that the large numbers can be written in a short form (scientific notation). These questions are real
life problems and students will be able to understand as to why these can be written in a shorter form

Model (EXPLAIN): Students will do a foldable with the small and large numbers steps guide to converting into scientific notation.
The foldable will also have an example on what it should look like. The foldable will help the students understand what a scientific
notation is, what the steps are if the standard form number is very small or very large, how to convert and what it should look like.
There will be a worksheet with 10 problems. As a class we will do 5 problems together.

Independent Practice (ELABORATE):

Students will complete the worksheet on converting. There will be 10 problems in total but as a class we will do 5 together. Students
will do the rest on their own.

Check for Understanding (EVALUATE):
 Monitor groups throughout
 Assist with foldable
 Walk around the classroom
 Ask questions to specific students
 Go over as a class on the worksheet

Closure: An exit ticket will be given at the end of the class, the exit ticket will be:
Convert 8.256 X 10^-4
Convert .0542145 to scientific notation
Convert 12,585,786 to scientific notation
Each student will use a piece of paper of their own. When counted to 3 students will compete to see who can answer it quick and
correct. The one who wins each round will be rewarded with a chocolate.

Name _____________________ Date______________

You only have one text message left before you exceed the data text limit. You will have to

shorten the message, to help you not exceed the text message data limit. You can abbreviate if

needed to.
