List A Allegro in C This is the third movement from Haydn's Piano Sonata in C. The tune here has been given to the violin. Ensemble with the piano is especially important in bars 13-18, as the dotted rhythm played by the violin is copied by the piano. Both parts then get gradually slower, leading up to the pause, before the original tune is played again. The style should be elegant, the notes played gracefully with precise rhythm. Haydn Lied Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born in Salzburg in 1756 and died in Vienna in 1791. Within his short life he wrote prolifically, encompassing most musical genres. ‘Lied’ is German for ‘song’, so this piece should be played in a singing style, It requires sensitive playing, with the dynamics shaped to die away at the end of each phrase. Be careful with your counting, as the ties and rests must be precise. Mozart Moderato 5 es Paar art — SSeS ee et soe oe — mf cantabite iy » . . Ao + . ; I eo © 1982 by Faber Music Ltd. Bach was the third child of J. S. Bach. This march was historically attributed to his father, as it comes from his ‘Anna Magdalena’ notebook (1725), however the notebook also contained pieces written by Bach's sons and other composers. Research has shown that the ‘March in D' was actually written by Carl Philipp Emanuel. This piece was originally composed for the keyboard, but it has a variety and sparkle that can be conveyed very effectively on the violin. In many bars, the emphasis occurs on the second beat of the bar, and this is balanced by bars of scalic quavers. ‘Tempo marcia ~ | List B Andante English composer Edward Elgar was born into a musical family and showed talent on the violin, piano, organ and other instruments. He had a great gift for writing melodies, and wrote widely for chamber groups, chorus and orchestra. He was knighted in 1904 and became the Master of the King's Music in 1924. This gentle piece is taken from a collection called Six Very Easy Melodious Pieces in the First Position. It is good practice for slurring dotted crotchet rhythms, as the bowing alternates between fast and slow. The dynamics given can be used to provide shape to the phrases. Elgar Andante | Red-Haired Boy This traditional hornpipe uses swung quavers throughout. It originates from Ireland, but the swing rhythm is also commonly heard in jazz music. It is lively, loud and energetic, so take care to control the bow, especially the separate-bow quavers at the ends of phrases. You really need to feel the beat so that the syncopated rhythms in bars 3 and 19 are clear. The second finger is used in a slide effect, up a semitone from F to F#, and this happens several times. Make sure the rests are clear, and use the dynamics to add to the excitement. Mary Cohen writes educational string music for all levels from beginner to advanced, and is published by Faber Music. List C Three Variations on 'Cat in the Snow' ‘Cat in the Snow’ is a German folk tune, and Carol Barratt bases each of her variations on a type of dance. The variations work to best effect when the theme is played exactly as written, with crisp staccato and accurate rhythm. Each variation contrasts with the style of the theme, in the /egato waltz, the fast-moving musette and the lilting jig. Watch out for the changes of time and key signature! Repeats are not required in the examination. Carol Barratt THEME Stealthily VARIATION 1: WALTZ io, , Moderately a a © Copyright 2001 by Boosey & Hawkes Music Publishers Ltd.
