The term labor relation has a wide definition depending on position, orientation, and the relationship to

structure of a union or organization. Specifically for this assignment, labor relations are defined as
peaceful manners that employers and employees achieve solutions towards their differences. Efficient
police relations necessitates for a harmonious environment for the employers and the employees to
allow both of them to work effectively for the goal of the public, their employees, and the entire
organization. To establish perfect sustainable labor relations, police managers and administrators are
advised to be aware of the issues around their unions and organizations. These current issues include;
grievance procedures, strikes, and collective bargaining. Concerning labor relations in police
administration, the subject matter highlights several differences between a union and a fraternal
organization.

An organization like fraternal orders of the police offers full representation of its members. It regulates
the works of law enforcement agencies, provides representation of labor, and offer job promotions for
the officers who work there. Unlike other unions which are formed to serve as political institutions, both
in their structures and the procedures involved in their making. Fraternal organizations are established
by members in the same field, for instance like the police. The organization is formed on faith based
precepts that fuels support and cooperation amongst the group members; whereas, unions are formed
to channel the grievances of its members to the government.

Unionization enhances a smooth environment to work just like other organizations. But in majority
cases, fraternal organizations are established from the framework of brotherhood, and over the years,
most of the organizations are made of men, membership is not permanent only for men as conceived by
the majority of the people as it was over the decades. To be distinguished from fraternal organizations,
unions are not limited to gender. As long as a person serves in the field, they are free to join the union
guiding them, despite their sex.

Organizations like fraternal orders are non-profitable organizations unlike most of the unions, the trade
unions. Every member of the organization owns the structure of the system. The organization does not
involve in third party stakeholders since it is accountable to its members. This means that every
individual has a say on how the organization runs, and by that, every person is mandated to enjoy the
success of the organization. Regarding unions, majority of them are profit oriented, members of the
unions only act according to what their officials pass, and thus having a slice of the benefits of a union is
limited.

Overall, labor relations are vital tools to employ in workforce. Both unions and organizations are
important in serving the thirst of their members despite their little differences. Unions concentrate to
represent its members to the state since they are established via politically structures and procedures.
On the other hand, organizations like fraternal orders are made by members serving in the same field.
They are used to express the problems they face and to streamline where it requires. Concerning all
that, police fraternal organizations were started as early as when the civil war began. Their goal was to
ensure their employees got assistance of welfare insurance and death benefits since most of the police
never unionize.
