ROADTRIP

PERSPECTIVE
DRAWINGS
Step-by-step directions for teaching
one point perspective through guided
practice.

DEVELOPED BY:
Elsbeth Bandli
GUIDED PRACTICE STEPS
1. Brainstorm a place that you would like to take a road trip (real or
imaginary).
2. Look up source imagery.
3. Draw a horizontal line across your paper using a pencil and ruler.
(this is your horizon line)
4. Draw the vanishing point: make a dot on or above the horizon line.
5. Draw the road: draw two lines using the ruler that meet at the
vanishing point.
6. Brainstorm a list of objects to add to the artwork.
7. Divide this list into three sections: foreground, middle ground, and
background.
8. Draw background objects: sketch it light!
9. Draw guiding lines for the middle ground objects.
10. Draw a vertical line to mark each object's location within the
guiding lines.
11. Draw the middle ground objects (overlap in front of background
objects)
12. Draw foreground objects (overlap in front of middle ground and
background objects)
13. Add details.
14. Erase extra lines.
15. Add color or pencil shading.
