Give an example of an engineering economic decision that may violate the code and explain

why it is a violation (cite the section/rule from the code).

In making economic decision, one thing to consider is the success of the

company. There can be sacrifices made which were weighted properly together
with other alternatives in order to have the best one, upon making such decisions.
This decision may or may not violate the code of ethics but unfortunately, there are
companies and even a single person in real life who can violate the listed codes in
their line of work or profession.
As a mechanical engineer, it is important to follow the code of ethics and
come up with the best one upon making decision because such profession brings
great impact to the life of every individual. For example you work in a mining
company, there are a lot of things to consider but for the most part the environment
and the people around must come first.
However, there are irresponsible mining companies who prioritize their
success more than anything else disregarding the effects of their actions to the
environment and to the people living in the area. They dug up great portion of
landmasses, dumps waste improperly and issues false statements to the public
regarding so that they can operate freely without being interrupted.
The mechanical engineer who was involved in the operation violated the
code of ethics of his profession. It is clearly stated under Fundamental Canons of
The Mechanical Engineer’s Code of Ethics that “Mechanical Engineers in the
fulfillment of their professional duties, shall; Hold paramount the safety, health,
and welfare of the public in the performance of their professional duties; Make /
issue public statements on issues only in the objective and truthful manner”. He
allowed his company to do such actions and this decision of his made him
responsible in the destruction of the environment. He also jeopardized the life
people who were living near the area especially those whose livelihood is
dependent on the natural resources within that place.
Thus, the mechanical engineer must face the consequences of his action
according to Rule 31 of The Mechanical Engineer’s Code of Ethics under
Provisions on Disciplinary Action.
